  • Ghost #3

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: Apr. 16, 2014

The demon Beleth has promised Ghost that he'll help her find more info on her apparent old friend James Barrow. In exchange, though, Beleth wants a new, younger host body and seemingly having no choice Ghost/Elisa accepts. Now, she and Beleth find themselves at what must have been her childhood house - she figures - just as Barrow appears menacingly…

    [AN OH-SO-HEAVY-WITH-SPOILERS REVIEW FOLLOWS]

Meanwhile, Ghost's team of friends pair off to investigate other leads. Vaughn and Caroline seek out information on Beleth's financial dealings and realize the trap he's laying for Ghost/Elisa. But they're not the only ones interested in this news as they are soon set upon by villain Doctor October's minions. Elsewhere, Tommy and Sloane track their leads on the White City Butcher, a serial killer that can apparently appear out of nowhere to claim his victims. As they sit and do this work in their apartment they don't realize that this killer has actually targeted them and has made his way into their place…

The demon that had Barrow's body commences to trying to destroy Ghost/Elisa, taunting her that October has already won this whole battle and she might as well surrender. But she's got more reserves in her power than this demon and is soon able to dispatch him, with just a hint of sadness at Barrow-the-man's passing. Beleth is able to alert her then to the numerous voicemails she has from Vaughn and Caroline, as they first discovered “something important” and then pleas for help as they're pursued by nasty demons. So they rush to their aid, with Beleth getting into demon fight and taking it to some other demons first before October shows up and drags Ghost's friends away.

The White City Butcher attacks Tommy and knocks him out while Sloane fights back with anything/everything at hand. But the killer tells her he's not there to harm but to have her “send him home” by killing him, apparently. However, before she can, Ghost/Elisa shows up here first, having got a panicked call from them as well. She gives him what he's after, too, in short order. Nearby, Beleth is having a ball, tearing up demons left and right. Yet he's soon overpowered so he offers a deal to October, one that apparently trades Caroline's soul to her, to trap ghost. But after October and her remaining minions leave, he reveals to Vaughn that it was just a bluff, as Caroline is okay. But his body is falling apart and Ghost/Elisa appears then, having just procured a new body.

Beleth is happy with the new form she's given him and gives her the info he'd promised. He then steps out into the light of day, to set about “giving October a run for her money.” However, he quickly realizes that the body he now inhabits is that which belongs to the White City Butcher and whose picture is now everywhere, thanks to Sloane. He's immediately spotted and arrested for good. That leaves Ghost/Elisa to be able to move into Beleth's old very fancy digs and start her mission anew.

A great story arc that reintroduces a fun character, writers Kelly Sue DeConnick and Chris Sebela do a fantastic job introducing all the key players while also detailing the world they all inhabit. Geraldo Borges' pencils are incredibly well-detailed images and Andy Owens' inks do them proper credit, the two artists combining to give an appropriate super-hero/demon-world aspect to the series as well. Just incredibly well done all around and very much worth following.
