After a chance meeting at a party, Courtney Bow and Dr. Vincent Krall hit it off well enough to leave the party together. Unfortunately, the trip they made was ill-fated and Krall crashed the car, killing Ms. Bow. But this doctor isn't just any old doctor. He's a mad scientist. Mad how? Same way as Dr. Frankenstein was…playing God and reanimating a corpse.

With his laboratory assistant Irene (not an Igor in any way), the two assemble Courtney together with bits of other cadavers, using an arm here, and God knows what else there. After the patchwork body is completed they do their thing to bring her back, but of course she's none too happy. After a violent reaction to an adrenaline shot, Krall puts her in her place with the threat of fire, which worked for the time being. And her name is no longer Courtney; that person is dead and gone. Say hello to Gail.

The book takes place in the early 1930s somewhere near Boston, and isn't a whole lot different than one might expect from the title and the cover, at least not in the first issue. Dialogue is tight and the black-and-white illustrations are nice and clean, and quite appealing to look at. The lack of grayscale is a curious thing, as it almost looks like it could a coloring book, but the thick lines and uncluttered panels create a nice atmosphere for the book.

Looking forward to the second issue to see what direction this may go in. The good doctor talks to fairies, which is odd, and it'll hopefully be interesting to see what that's all about. This is a solid first issue from the creative team of Jamie Rich and Megan Levens, and here's hoping they can manage to keep things both different and engaging. Frankenstein-type stories can get tedious at times, and if this one turns into a love story drama, it will sadly fall off this reader's radar. But so far, so good. Keep it coming.
