  • The Bunker #4

    Released by: Oni Press
    Released on: May 21, 2014

Daniel, in the present, heads to his new job as a research scientist at the company where his father's work has been used as its basis. He's told he's to finish off that work here now. Disappointment, he's informed, is not an option. And so he sets to work, his future-self letter of warning close by him in his bag…

[THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE: SPOILERS ARE BELOW!]

Natasha is still recovering from the fact that Daniel not only slept with her best friend but that he'll ditch her in the future. She calls in sick to work and goes for a run, having a bit of a breakdown while resting. A helpful young man offers consolation and advice so she takes him home and screws him senseless. Daniel's phone, meanwhile, keeps buzzing but he's too immersed in his work to answer, until he finally notices everyone in a state of panic as they're all aware of the bomb that went off downtown.

Since that's where Heidi lives Daniel immediately heads to find her, trying to enlist Natasha's help as well, despite their recent problems. He runs by her place and she's not heard the news yet so she's not happy to see him. But once she sees the news about the bomb she hops in his car. They naturally get stuck in traffic so she takes off on foot. Daniel yells at her to get back in the car and so the two have their big fight here and now. He says their relationship was obviously over and he did them a favor. Natasha doesn't see it that way, though, and leaves off by throwing the future-Daniel's murder of the planet back in his face as reason enough for her to leave.

The two then quietly make their way on foot to Heidi's place. They all embrace and Heidi asks if they've heard about Grady. On the TV, he's just getting interviewed, downplaying his hero status. So Heidi shows Daniel and Natasha the future newspaper she found after Grady dropped it earlier, before the bomb detonated. They now all know that Grady was fully aware this was going to happen and let it.

Just then, it's Billy at the door with future-Grady in tow. As they're grappling with this sudden, unexpected appearance present day-Grady also shows up, promising quite the discussion in the next issue…

Joshua Hale Fialkov's story tightens up exceptionally well in this issue, really moving the characters around nicely as they grapple with all levels of tragedy. Joe Infurnari's artwork continues to keep pace nicely, consistently encompassing each character's unique struggle visually in a way that just flows expertly.
