  • Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty Lives #4

    Published by: Dynamite Comics
    Released on: June 11, 2014

    [SPOILERS MIGHT APPEAR BELOW]

Moriarty continues his nefarious plot to return to prominence, but as it draws closer to fruition it's also snaring other unknowing accomplices to their own potential demise.

Posing as “Walther” he's managed to infiltrate the gang of the powerful, sadistic Baron Bombastus von Hohenheim and quickly excelled at his duties - perhaps too well, as the Baron asks right-hand man Gustav (who's under Moriarty's spell of influence) to keep an eye on him after his latest stunt. Walther left one of the Baron's experiments involving a human fetus joined to a butchered cow in the midst of the town in order to stir up the citizens. This allows the Baron to step in as the voice of reason and resolution, something the town's mayor takes offense at. So, given his displayed willingness to perform dirty work, the Baron tasks Walther with dispatching the troublesome mayor.

Meanwhile, Walther has seduced the baroness with romance and plans of escape so she leads him to the secret, un-openable vault underneath the manor. Moriarty reveals that he already has located the keys and that, later, they can escape together and take the riches with them. However, the young boy, Udo, overhears this conversation and knows, in order to get his revenge on the baron for the death of his parents, that he must act quickly. He reports back to Sara, Karl's wife who's not fallen under Moriarty's grip like her husband and wants to save him, and she gives Udo a pep talk to get him to betray Moriarty first.

What follows is a secret midnight meeting, a trap, a panicked flight, and Moriarty running out of options also leaves young Udo tied up and in the scalpel-wielding hands of the Baron! This story has been openly brutal and bloody which only heightens the tension and drama around the villainous lead character. David Liss does a great job handling it all, constantly and consistently ratcheting up the action. The artwork from Carlos Furuzono keeps pace, too, brightly featuring even the nastiest of details. This all wraps up in the next issue so look out! And get caught up on this entertaining series!
