  • Vandroid #5

    Published by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: June 25, 2014

In this fiery conclusion, Vandroid and his team have launched their brutal assault on the evil Metrotech but are met by another android team set to stop them!

    [SPOILERS, YO']

Vandroid finds power in his rage, not in the massive store of trioxidyne surrounding them so he's able to use that against his foes. Keener, for his part, runs off to sabotage the air system, letting the toxic production by product build up and destroy the building for them. On the bad guy side, Taylor, having been pressed into service by Daniels, is directing the androids' fight. And Dick Daniels, safely in his penthouse office atop this fight, uses the P.A. to address Vandroid and offer to take him into his service for all the trioxidyne he could ever want. But when the offer is spurned, Daniels reveals the large number of other gangs he's hired for not just protection but also for putting Vandroid down, once and for all.

Back to the fight, and Vandroid has his hands full not just with Taylor's new android fighters but, now, the Vanettes deem him unnecessary once they find the cache of trioxidyne and turn on him. Just then, Keener's explosives detonate and, in the ensuing chaos, Vandroid is able to get above the storage of the chemical and push it all onto his robotic foes, causing them to dissolved almost instantly. The toxic gas is also released and Keener tells Vandroid he's only got 20 minutes before that fireball ignites, before Keener himself passes out.

Daniels is enraged, sending all his goons to every remaining floor in the building, to attack Vandroid on the elevator as it opens on every floor leading up to the penthouse. Much over-the-top violence ensues until Vandroid finally reaches his target. He approaches the incredulous, shaking Daniels and offers him a light for his cigar - igniting that whole fireball and blowing up the whole building. Vandroid walks out, of course, a little worse for wear but still standing, giving him the last word with a wounded, horrified Taylor before silencing him forever.

Keener is mortally wounded and ready to check out but Vandroid has other plans to “fix” him and “put the band back together.” They smile and laugh as the series ends. This issue also includes a clever crossword puzzle, “collector card” cutouts, and fake tattoos, keeping the throwback spirit real to the end and very entertaining from start to finish. If you Canon or Golan-Globus fare from the 1980s then this series is most definitely for you.
