  • Indecencies 1930

    Released by: Alpha France
    Released on: August 12th, 2014.
    Director: Gérard Kikoí¯ne
Cast: Brigitte Lahaie, Maude Carolle , Patrice Chéron, Alban Ceray
    Year: 1977
    Purchase From TLA Video

    The Movie:

Also known as Parties Fines and Education Of The Baroness, 1977's Indecencies 1930 (as it's titled on this release) was directed by Gérard Kikoí¯ne and it takes place in the fancy mansion home occupied by a baroness (Brigitte Lahaie), her husband, their maid Alice (Maude Carolle) and a chauffeur. Early on we learn that the maid is perpetually in the mood, playing with herself whenever she's given the opportunity while the baroness is more interested in the long end of her hairbrush than her voyeuristic submissive husband (Patrice Chéron). Speaking of, he and the chauffeur (Richard Bigotini) switch roles and head out for a drive and get into some trouble after picking up a foxy hitchhiker (Michí¨le d'Agro) who gets coerced into paying them back for the ride.

While they drive off to the apartment of the baron's mistress (Sylvie Dessartre) so that he can be whipped and treated like a dog, Alice lets two men into the home - her half blind accordion playing brother Jean (Jack Gatteau) and his friend, the domineering Mr. Finch (Alban Ceray). The baroness is understandably confused as to why these men are in her home but soon enough, she finds out - Finch has got an axe to grind about the upper class and he intends to dominate and humiliate her with some help from Alice. “The leisure class, up the ass!” he proclaims, and you can figure out on your own what he does to her.

And here Alice and the Baroness basically shift roles with Alice taking some time off and fooling around with the guys while her former boss is humiliated and forced to work in the kitchen and satisfy them in various ways. You'd think her husband would come home and put a stop to all of this but as she experiences a sexual reawakening, he's still off with his mistress watching bestiality loops and barking like a dog on all fours with a collar around his neck…

While this is every bit the dirty movie you'd expect it to be and then some, the movie has also got some smarts behind it that wind up making this more than just a bunch of bumping and grinding. There's a very obvious and often times very funny vein of anti-bourgeoisie sentiment running throughout the movie and the cast are able to play off of this element of the script in interesting ways. While Jean is more or less out of it, playing away at his accordion while Finch gets the dirty work started, Finch is definitely out to humiliate Lahaie's character mentally and physically. Alice, her 'loyal' servant, is only too happy to help though she can't help but note once she forces her employer to disrobe what a nice body she has - this is an adult film, after all.

Kikoí¯ne paces the movie well so that it's got enough scenes of carnality mixed in with the humorous narrative to work on both levels. Of course, the cast are all game here and while Lahaie is her typically gorgeous self and plenty fun to watch, Maude Carolle as the maid gets a bit more screen time here and proves every bit her equal in regards to enthusiasm and gusto. The movie gets a bit unorthodox at times, at least by North American standards, as it works in some vegetable and food play and, yeah, that dog loop the two characters watch shows a bit more than most are going to want to see but the movie flows really well. It's nicely lit, very well shot and takes advantage of a few different locations to deliver a top tier entry in the Alpha France collection.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

TLA Video, through a deal with Alpha France, presents Indecencies 1930 on MOD/DVD-R in letterboxed non-anamorphic widescreen. The image is a little soft, though not as soft as some of the other transfers in the line so far which results in slightly better detail here. Colors look good if occasionally a bit faded while skin tones look pretty natural. Black levels are closer to a dark grey than true black but this is perfectly watchable.

The disc includes audio options in the original French language as well as an English language dubbed track, both in Dolby Digital Mono track. It would have been cool to see both the English and French tracks provided as the dubbing here is pretty obvious, though it is at least played straight. Dialogue is occasionally a bit muffled but more often than not it's pretty clear and the score sounds quite good. There are no subtitles provided on the disc.

There are no extras on this disc.

    The Final Word:

Indecencies 1930 isn't just a good adult movie, it's a good movie period. The direction and camerawork is top notch, the performances are great and the humor is genuinely funny. Fans of Ms. Lahaie should consider it essential but anyone with an appreciation for the golden age of French smut should definitely get a kick out of this one.

I have this by Alpha France under the Parties Fines title. I wonder why they swapped the title for this re-release.
