  • Judge Dredd #22

    Published by: IDW Publishing
    Released on: Aug. 20, 2014

Part one of the Black Light District finds the alien entity now protecting Sector One with a barrier, with Judge Cal proclaiming it safe for the citizens. But he has harsh words for Dredd who he says has apparently taken the other Council members to certain death.

    [SPOILERS]

Dredd, meanwhile, is back in reality, now with Anderson tucked inside his head, trying to give him instructions to survive this fight with the Dark Judges. She's warning him of what's coming up shortly until she's interrupted in her own mind's safe place by Judge Death.

Back outside the barrier, Judge Cal proclaims himself as acting Chief Justice, to the outrage of the citizenry. He also states his plan he's putting into effect immediately, called the “A(ll) E(yes) O(n) U” protocol that monitors the city's inhabitants' every single move, everywhere and every day.

Dredd, meanwhile, continues to fight the Dark Judges as best he can while Andersson fights off Judge Death in her mind. She realizes that this battle is in her mind so she can do what she wants. She seemingly destroys Death but he's still intact, trying to find Dredd so they can possess him and escape Sector One. He heads back to fight Dredd, leaving Andersson able to now warn Dredd again.

Dredd plans to lead these Dark Judges to the alien barrier and dissolve them. Since he has a special communication with it, he figures to survive not just intact but, also, fully healed. But Andersson sees a worse fate awaiting him. And at that same moment, one of the chief scientists pulls Judge Cal away from his public delivery to tell him that, due to their prodding and testing of the “ooze,” it's now become uncommunicative. It will still hold the Dark Judges out but it will dissolve anything that comes into contact with it. Andersson again warns Dredd of this future but he tells her she'll just have to trust him. But it's then that Judge Death re-enters her mind, leaving her with her hands more than full.

The other Council members find themselves on the poisonous prison world of Titan. They are soon face to face with the corrupt Judges they sentenced there. But those criminals give the Council members rebreathers so they can survive until these evil former Judges can have their way with them…

Duane Swierczynski keeps the action coming and keeps coming up with inventive new ways to move the story in exciting new directions. Stephen B. Scott is brought in on artwork and he keeps the style consistent with the rest of this storyline quite well. Still well worth picking up.
