  • Savage Dragon #197

    Published by: Image Comics
    Released on: Aug. 20, 2014

Fellow mutated young people Zelda and Parker are discussing what's just happened to Herringbone's plan, now that Malcolm Dragon has destroyed another building in the Danger Zone. Zelda thinks they're chances of getting the cure from Bellco Chemicals is now gone and Parker consoles her by saying she'll always be beautiful. Isn't mutant love grand?

    [SPOILERS]

Meanwhile, the Savage Dragon truly is savage now, laying into the members of the Vicious Circle attacking him. One even blasts his foot off, finally freeing him from his demonoid-forged manacles. That also frees him to destroy the rest of the villains. While his foot regenerates Maxine tries to approach him, to find Malcolm in this transformed beast. Zelda, meanwhile, encourages him to go to Bellco Chemicals and bring back the cure for their mutations.

Back at Vicious Circle HQ, Dart is getting a status update she's none too pleased with. Fusion gives her the rundown on their number who are dead, seriously injured and/or in police custody or who have fled. He claims it to be a disaster at which point Dart cuts off his head and grumbles about having to do something yourself in order to have it done right.

Maxine is back at the police precinct, shocked by her encounter with “Mutated Dragon” as he clearly didn't even recognize her. The cop comforting her, though, gives her a dash of reality stating that this is the sort of thing that happens to someone like Malcolm and it won't be the last time, either. In another office, Zelda has gone to Malcolm's buddy the chief of police Stewart and told him everything. While he's skeptical of her and her cohorts being pawns in Herringbone's scheme he's also aware of the reality they're now facing and that it won't end well.

Mutated Dragon then crashes into Bellco Chemicals but they're ready for him, armed with tranquilizer guns containing the anti-dote. They shoot him up with that and he's back to being regular Malcolm Dragon. But he's still pretty upset at the company and despite the arrival of some city cops who urge him to use the proper channels Malcolm grabs those tranq guns and heads back to the Danger Zone.

Just as he's about to leave, though, Dart shows up and slices off his hands. The cops open fire and she kills some of them as well before Malcolm knocks her out cold. Later, in the hospital, Malcolm awakens to some good and bad news: He's alive but they had to use his father's blood as a transfusion which made him lose any powers he'd gained from his mother's side, like generating electricity. Zelda then comes in to thank him, now that she's back to normal. She explains the antidote was passed around and that Bellco is helping with the cleanup while not admitting any guilt on their part. Also, Stewart decided that the whole plan was pinned on Herringbone alone. As she's leaving Maxine shows up, suspicious but Malcolm calms her down, saying Zelda already has a boyfriend and she was just there to thank her. The final shot, then, is of non-mutated Zelda and Parker, hand in hand, walking away together…

Erik Larsen provides a fitting end for this brief story in the new version of the titular character and it's handled pretty well. His artwork is also consistently vibrant and engaging, making this a playful read from beginning to end. This issue also includes the short story Vanguard, a team heading to one's home planet only to find it savaged by a plague and then another edition of the “Funnies” section as well.
