Part Four: The Cry of Mankind starts in the flashback of xxx psychically “seeing” the stories of their shared past, their genesis, looking into roughly the present day for us and carefully building a multi-layered narrative upon that vision.

    [SPOILERS]

In the future, the super-beings Thomas, Abi and Michael continue their visions of this place, the site of the lab in which they may have been initially created, at some level. Michael's slowly piecing it all together but it's an emotional work, to be sure. He's able to tell that a group of “artisans” discovered their Father. The frame then flashes back to its lab days with Indi and the other genetic scientists checking the growth rate of the 100 test subjects they've created from the DNA of the super-human they found in the ice (that they've named “Adam”).

Project lead James has named them all with Christian names like Michael, Thomas, Mary, etc., which amuses the other scientists as they play at some level of creation of life. They're pleased with their progress, however, some of the test subjects aren't completely “viable,” in that it appears they are mutations the scientists couldn't account for and have turned out as, basically, genetic freaks.

There are 27 of these aberrations in total out of the 100 and the military general Hubbard overseeing the whole endeavor considers that an acceptable loss and that those should just be destroyed. James points out that each of these specimen have already cost millions of dollars to grow to this point and, thus, have some base value there. But, as other scientists point out, the quality of life for these particular beings will most likely be awful. James argues that because they don't know why these occurred that makes them valuable, to study and observe them and figure out what went wrong. He also correctly guesses that these 100 aren't the end of the whole effort so Hubbard lets him continue with the entire host.

A short time later, the healthy subjects are moved out of their stasis tubes and into proper incubators with those 27 remaining in their tubes until they figure out what, exactly, to do with them. The scientists celebrate the New Year with their success but, flashing back to the future/present day, the super-being trio have entered Adam's chamber and can remember some of this place now. As Michael says, it was here that Father rescued them, getting them away from that place…

Day 13 after taking the healthy subjects out of their tubes is when they finally all awake and begin wailing, at once. But what the scientists at first think is something neat becomes a bit of pandemic as, all over the globe, people begin erupting with blood out of their heads. The sound, as they describe it, is now more like a scream, the scream of 100 children. Enough to finally rouse Adam/Father from his long slumber…

Antony Johnston's story seriously picks up the pace in this issue, linking past and present with a great deal of horrific discover and action. Christopher Mitten's artwork keeps the pace, the black and white serving as a nice ironic touch to the grey areas the story is covering. This series continues to just keep impressing and is well worth jumping into, especially now.
