The hero of the story (at least so far) is a salvager named No. Last issue he was given an infant to protect and quickly discovered why she was so valuable: her very tears KILL the vile and foul things collectively called The Spread. With humanity's only hope in his arms, the importance of his role in life has gone up a million notches. And his being immune to the disease caused by the disgusting and gooey Spread is why he is the man to get her to safety and begin the salvation of the human race.
Before the continuation of No's and Hope's story (Hope is the baby) the leader of a group of Road Warrior-type nasties delivers a rallying speech, a la Cyrus from The Warriors. Ravello is a blonde god, unblemished by the poverty and harsh living conditions, and he knows what Hope is and wants No dead so he can have her. And he's very serious.
Meanwhile, No and Hope are making their way through the snow to whatever destination No has in mind, when they happen upon some slavers. Hope's hunger makes a crazy slave lactate and No decides she need to come with them to keep the baby fed and quiet. Molly is her name, and she's a psychological mess, but the baby brings her back to a reality of sorts. It would be an easy acquisition, but unbeknownst to No they have been followed by something not yet on his radar, and this something can create The Spread out of nothing. Oh boy…
Another solid entry into the new series by Justin Jordan, who is obviously influenced by a great number of exploitation movies, and Kyle Strahm is just plain showing off. He should, because his work on this title is so far fantastic. There's a panel where No buries an axe into a fleshy part of a beast he's fighting, and it turns into a jagged-toothed mouth instantly, becoming more dangerous than it was a second before. Little details like that make the outcome No and Hope's (and now Molly's) mission even more hopeless. Although Jordan makes it obvious it is NOT hopeless because, well, Hope is narrating the story as an adult. A solid script, nightmarish artwork…this is a really entertaining book and is recommended without hesitation.
