  • Judge Dredd #23

    Published by: IDW Publishing
    Released on: Sept. 17, 2014

This issue contains the second part of the Black Light District storyline, picking up on last issue's cliffhanger ending where Anderson sees Dredd's death inside the alien ooze that's surrounded Sector One of his beloved Meg-City One.

    [DROKKIN' SPOILER-HEAVY REVIEW!]

But Dredd's running at full speed, in the hope of luring Judge Death into the corrosive ooze while Dredd maintains his strange allied bond with the stuff. That villain stops short, though, seeing the trap just in time while Anderson then loses all contact with Dredd. Meanwhile, Dredd drifts in the stuff but doesn't meet his end; instead, he emerges on the other side of the ooze layer, in Sector Two, one month later…

He thinks it's only been a few moments, though, so he reaches out to Anderson again. Elsewhere, two other Judges receive their orders to arrest the one and only Judge Dredd. Back within the construct inside Dredd's mind where Anderson exists now, she walks back through the past month, figuring she's not dead but trapped there. Together, now, then, they figure something must have changed with the ooze. But before they can investigate it much the Sector Two judges appear and Dredd must flee, remembering he's still a fugitive to them.

Meanwhile, on the prison moon of Titan, Chief Justice Griffin and several of the other main judges are facing the corrupt judges they condemned to this prison planet. They're holding a mock trial and condemning these judges for blinking and breathing too often on “their” planet. The bad judges figure this is just good ol' retributive fun.

Back in Sector Two and Dredd's retreated to the city's lower levels. Dredd's got a funny feeling that he's being watched but Anderson's not reading anything. Soon enough, though, he encounters the “sky-eyes,” bug-sized robot cameras, created by the creepy lackeys of Judge Cal. He sits in front of dozens of monitors from these cameras, wanting to witness Dredd's demise. But his lackeys also point out the “deadeye” problem is growing, what Cal dismisses as “social shock syndrome,” affecting all that sector's citizens. Acting Chief Justice Cal's extreme surveillance program has put them all into a stupefied fear that's near paralytic.

Out on Titan, Griffin gets a telepathic message from Judge Omar, who disappeared long ago, trapped on the prison planet in the same way these judges got there. He's managed to evade the bad judges and is working on getting them a ship to escape. Down in Sector Two, after Anderson fills in the details to Dredd on what's happened to the citizens, his pursuing judges burst in and start firing indiscriminately. Dredd is wounded but on the run, much to the observing Judge Cal's delight. Dredd knows the only way out is to retreat to Sector One, back through the ooze. Despite Anderson's pleas not to force her through that again, he gets to that layer right as a sniper bullet hits him in the chest.

Cut to (again) one month later and Dredd's emerged on the other side. Anderson's more aware of the situation this time, though, and contacts him immediately, confirming that they're both still alive. However, the Dark Judges are also there, waiting his return as well. Dredd relishes the fight as Judge Death tells his others to bring him Dredd's body as it is the key to their survival.

This storyline is set to conclude next month and it's been a damn fine run. Duane Swierczynski has done an outstanding job here, creating a brand-new storyline featuring well-known Dredd characters and building a great story. Nelson Daniel's images are equally outstanding, with lots of action scenes in all kinds of environments to let him stretch his artistic wings. A great series all around and well worth taking the time with.
