New storyline, new artist! We're given a bit of the backstory of Anderson, the badass assassin ghost sort-of watching over main character Jackson's life.

    [SPOILERS]

The issue begins with Anderson narrating about her life to Jackson. She was a particularly talented assassin and mercenary. She identifies the choices she thought she had and the paths that - because of her particular talents - lay open to her.

She then details that last job where her life & path changed, leading her to her present state of existence. She's hired to investigate a redneck gang who are smuggling some kind of weapons and disrupt their operations. To do this she has to go undercover with the gang, something she is loathe to do, preferring an up-front-assault style.

She finds the gang and sexily slides her way into their confidence. She observes that they have way too much money for a bunch of idiot hayseeds and are obviously dealing in something. Soon enough, then, she's got one named Rufus worked up enough to brag and show off what they're dealing in - magic, or, more specifically, magic candles made from virgin's blood. This gang apparently fancied themselves a “mage militia,” using the candles pretty much just to get high.

Anderson sees the potential value of these to her contacts and decides to end her undercover stint then and there. She proceeds to wade through the small gang's members pretty easily, loading up a motorcycle with the candles and escaping. She's pursued by the gang's leader, Tiberius, though, and after causing him to crash she cockily strides away, allowing him to shoot her and take her captive.

It's then that Anderson describes her life before that point and that she's not the product of a disturbed upbringing at all. To the contrary, she had a bit of a charmed life, eventually joining the Marines and learning how good she was at killing - and how much she enjoyed it. After her life flashes in front of her, she awakens as Tiberius' prisoner in the remote woods of Bulgaria. He's meeting with three hooded figures who look to take possession of those candles. He thinks he can throw Anderson in as part of the deal.

He's surprised then when one of the hooded figures shoots him down. This figure also shoots down the other two hooded people, tired of their “brother” treatment of it all. He destroys the candles, stating he doesn't need the competition in his line of work. He then reveals himself to be Markus Schrecken, a specially-talented and successful mage. After allowing her to dispatch Tiberius he asks Anderson to join him and she figures this is the way her life is supposed to go.

She says it was a pretty easy job, working for Markus, until he assigned her to “steal a ghost.” That's the job that involved breaking Jackson out of jail, the job that resulted in her dying and becoming this ghost. She further describes how, in her last moments, she promised that she'd haunt him until the day he died. Jackson thanks her for being there to watch over him but she reveals to him that there's something else out there, something bigger, more potentially sinister, that's looking out for him. She can only catch a glimpse now and then but never anything definitive. Jackson asks her if she can see it right then, as a Death-like shadow extends behind him, but Anderson confesses that she cannot see it…

Joshua Williamson writes a good transitionary story here, having just wrapped up the bigger storyline. It's good to get some more details on the mysterious lives tied to the main character and this one gets at the heart of the frustrated ex-mercenary Anderson quite well. A new artist joins the title here as well and Goran Sudzuka does a great job with it all. If you're interested in this title now is the time to hop in on a new storyline as it's well worth your time.
