  • The Bunker #6

    Published by: Oni Press
    Released on: Sept. 10, 2014

We last left future-Grady and future-Natasha in the present, heading to L.A. with a bomb in their car, debating if they were still doing the right thing. So, in this issue, we're given a glimpse into how these characters came to this space.

    [SPOILERS]

The timeline for this installment is 30 days prior to the discovery of the Bunker by the five in the present day. Grady and Natasha arrive, having teleported the Bunker back through time and buried in the woods. As there's no love lost between their future selves, they constantly bicker and argue over pretty much everything as they prepare their past-selves to receive the information their future-selves hope will fix the course of history and save the world.

Grady wants to take credit for his part in the tragedy that unfolds but Natasha lays it out clearly that it was her work, her involvement that truly made everything possible - the tragedy and the technology that's placed them in the past, attempting to fix it all. She's also very clear in how much she loathes Grady.

Two days later and they've managed to tunnel out. Natasha emerges and heads to the house first, with Grady shortly behind her. She explains the contents of her letter to her past-self, the tough emotional decisions and revelations about her then-friends. Grady praises her for her practicality but she reflects that that's all she is to him, the “cold one” that can get this insane plan put into motion.

24 days before discovery and Natasha realizes that the terrorists supposedly behind the bombing that's the primary catalyst for all the future events don't exist - she can find no trace of them. She goes to tell Grady and finds him jerking it to interactive porn on their future computer. She tells him he apparently can't do anything correctly and then relates her findings (or lack thereof) to him. They have the couple suspects listed but Grady needs this event to happen. Natasha draws the line, though, not killing anyone for Grady.

19 days prior and they're running out of options. Natasha thinks maybe they can just reveal themselves to their past-selves and tell them the truth. Grady laughs off that idea, sticking to the original plan with the letters they've prepared for each of them. But Natasha is worried that they have zero confirmation on that attack actually occurring so, the next day, she sets off on her own to investigate more fully, telling Grady not to do anything until she returns.

Of course, Grady is Grady and can't manage to not do something so he writes the second note to his past-self. He also destroys all their paperwork. He sits and waits until the day prior to the discovery of the Bunker. Then, he goes to sneak a peek at the house and their present-selves coming together, unaware of the news that's about to shatter their world.

But he still doesn't have confidence in his past-self so he creates a post-it note and finds the nearby gas station/mail stop and manages to get it rush-delivered. This is on the morning of the date of the Bunker's discovery and Grady's still uneasy and Natasha's nowhere to be found…

Joshua Hale Fialkov gets to ratchet up the tension on a whole other level by taking a bit of a break in the narrative flow here. It's a gamble to go back in the story and fill in some missing details but it really works here, making the future-selves case all the more compelling. As usual, Joe Infurnari's artwork is impeccable as well here. This series just continues to impress with each issue.
