  • The Shadow: Midnight In Moscow #4

    Published by: Dynamite Comics
    Released on: Aug. 13, 2014

This series could also be titled You Can't Keep a Good Crime-Fighter Down! as this issue gets Lamont Cranston back into his alter-ego's way of doing things…

    [SPOILERS]

This installment begins with The Shadow on the streets of London, getting names of other criminals he's pursuing in his attempt to discern what all this case means. Elsewhere, “Saint John” and Dixie are putting the squeeze on Dr. Thorpe, whom they're blackmailing to do some secret research. He says he's doing his best but that isn't good enough for the Saint here.

The Shadow's work leads him to a nimble-fingered criminal named Eli “Kikey” McSheen, a poorly-named Irish Jew who now is specializing in building miniature furniture and the like. A quick interrogation and The Shadow's off to Paris in search of Dixie and the Saint. Those two characters leave Dr. Thorpe intimidated and at his work, debating their opposite approaches to dealing with him. The Shadow, now there, observes the workshop and comments on Dr. Thorpe's miserable state of affairs. However, upon entering the lab, he finds the good doctor's hanged himself out of misery.

He's still unable to see what it is, exactly, they're all up to here and is unable to yet connect this to his old nemesis, Benedict Stark, but he knows the answer's there somewhere. In finding the address in Paris, the Shadow was able to confuse Saint and Dixie who were also on their way there, putting them on alert after they finally figure out that someone's been messing with them…

The story then moves to Berlin, where The Shadow finds an old Brooklyn hood back at his game, only wearing the uniform of a U.S. soldier in post-war Germany. Specifically, though, The Shadow wants to know of the details of this criminal's enterprise here and its tie to the Soviets. Back to Saint and Dixie and they're on a plane, sensing someone's on to them, and trying to make their escape. They hint that it might even be “this Shadow fella” that's on to them, unaware that Margot is also on this plane, just a row ahead…

This issue ends then in Moscow, finally getting to the city of the series' title. The Shadow confronts the British ambassador, having been led there from his interrogations in Berlin. He confronts the diplomat with the truth of his treason, offering him a way out if and only if he follows The Shadow's orders exactly.

Howard Chaykin really gets the pieces moving in unison in this issue, a cohesion that hasn't been as apparent in the previous issues. Sure, it's a blast to have Chaykin back doing The Shadow once again and having him deal with “retirement” in a post-WWII world is plenty entertaining. But the intersecting storylines finally fall into line here and it serves the overall structure quite well. And it's still a worthwhile investment to follow this series that knows what evil lurks…
