The Movie:
Directed by Claude Mulot under his prolific nomme de porn Frédéric Lansac, 1975's Pussy Talk (or La Sex Qui Parle if you prefer), has every reason to be regarded as a cult classic. It was remade two years later as an R-rated comedy in the US called Chatterbox (and featuring Rip Taylor), but this Alpha France production is, by all accounts and purposes, the original - and still the best - talking vagina movie.
The film follows the exploits of Joí«lle (Pénélope Lamour), a beautiful young woman with a successful career at an advertising agency who is married to an architect named Eric (Jean-Louis Philippe from Jean Rollin's Lips Of Blood). Their marriage seems fine at first but soon gets a little rocky when it is revealed rather publicly at a party one night that Joí«lle's pussy talks, and quite loudly and aggressively at that. This is not only a little embarrassing but it's causing Joí«lle to behave rather brashly.
When Eric gets a phone call during a business meeting not from Joí«lle but literally from the troublemaker that lies between her legs commanding him to come home because 'I wanna get fucked!' he knows that something needs to be done. To help out he enlists the aid of a psychologist named Martine Dodd (Ellen Earl) but soon enough Joí«lle's secret gets out. A journalist named Richard Sadler (Vicky Messica) does everything he can to chase her down as she basically goes into hiding at the home of her Aunt Barbara (Sylvia Bourdon). Eventually a series of flashbacks explain what happened to a younger Joí«lle (Béatrice Harnois of Felicia fame) when she experimented with a Pinocchio toy obviously caught in a lie (you can imagine what goes where). From here we learn how she became insatiable, going at it not only with her boyfriend but her step-father and then even aggressively going after a priest during her confession! What are Eric and Joí«lle to do…?
Quite possibly the only movie you'll ever see in which a reporter interviews a woman's nether regions with a microphone and featuring plenty of shots from the point of view of the nether regions in question, Pussy Talk is completely ridiculous from start to finish - but it's also a lot of good wicked fun. The sex doesn't really ramp up until the later part of the movie, though there are little bits here and there. Once we get to the half-way point though, things definitely turn around in that regard thanks to those aforementioned flashbacks to Joí«lle's sordied past. The movie is quite well paced and plenty interesting for the duration of its ninety-two minutes, however, so even when there isn't as much bumping and grinding as some horndogs might want, the movie is still plenty entertaining.
The performances here are uniformly solid as everyone plays all of this completely straight. Louis Philippe is very good as the understandably conflicted husband. Pénélope Lamour may not have typical porn star looks but she's definitely a very attractive lady and she plays her version of Joí«lle with an appropriate frigidity which makes for good contrast with the more 'on fire' version we see when Béatrice Harnois takes over. Vicky Messica is fun to watch as the reporter, particularly once he does get his interview, and Sylvia Bourdon as the eclectic aunt steals a few scenes.
The film is based around an admittedly ridiculous concept, but Mulot and company somehow manage to make it all work in the end. The movie is quite well shot and features some nice camerawork and good production values. In its English dubbed form the voice actor who played Joí«lle's yappity snatch really goes for it, making much of what happens in the film rather hysterical.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Pussy Talk is presented on DVD in 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen and while the colors are a little faded and there are sometimes some issues with blooming contrast, for the most part the transfer is pretty decent. Skin tones look good and there are no issues with compression artifacts. Black levels aren't always reference quality but they're not bad and all in all, this is a perfectly decent transfer.
The disc includes an English language Dolby Digital Mono track as well as a French language option but no subtitles to accompany it. The dialogue is pretty decent and easy enough to follow if a little bit on the flat side. There are no issues with any hiss or distortion to note and the score sounds good. No problems here.
The only extra on the disc is a trailer that plays after the end credits have finished up. The packaging states it includes both an explicit version and a non-explicit version but only the ninety-two minute long hardcore cut is on the DVD-R.
The Final Word:
La Sex Qui Parle is pretty funny stuff but the cast manage to mostly play it all straight and deliver some decent scenes of steamy carnality as well as some good laughs. The MOD/DVD-R release from Alpha France/TLA is light on extras but it doesn't look bad and the movie itself is definitely worth seeing - it's a legitimate XXX/cult movie oddity!
