  • Alice Cooper #2

    Released By: Dynamite Comics
    Release Date: October 1, 2014

    The Story:

Unfortunately, it looks like I don't have access to any images from this comic like the ones that Dynamite provided on the product page for issue #1, so you'll just have to take my word for the fact that the art in this book is on par with the first book.

Anyway, let's see...in the first issue of Dynamite's new Alice Cooper series, we were introduced to The Nightmare Place, Alice's nasty manager Lucius Black, and little Robbie, garage sale purchaser of an Alice album that he plays backwards when he gets home. Book 2 picks up the story lines in essentially the same order, and introduces us to Lucius' brother Andronicus Black. Andronicus arrives at The Nightmare Place to find Alice's body in the belly of his own snake, apparently put there for safe-keeping until the matter of the possession of his soul can be sorted out.

Travelling to Las Vegas, Andronicus is confronted by his brother, who is none-too-pleased about the loss of his prize act, and has sought the counsel of pretty lady Ambrosia White, under the impression that The Coop has simply switched management teams. Ambrosia is quick to point out that Cooper's talents were wasted under Lucius' management skills, but becomes more curious when Andronicus reveals that Alice is bound to a different master, all right...but it's not him.

Meanwhile, Alice is carrying out the wishes of his new master...young record purchaser Robbie....and those wishes focus on getting some payback from the bullies who have been picking on him at school. But the best laid plans of those who rely on a guy who can't stop talking about how rock and roll he is are bound to backfire, and Robbie finds out that he's bitten off way more than he can chew.

It was mentioned in the review for issue #1 of this new series that maybe there was a little too much going on to figure out what was really going on, and that remains true to book #2. The story lines thus far are interesting, but a whole lot more confusing. Why is everybody going to The Nightmare Place to find Alice if he's really a spirit out in the real world? How was he able to get out of his contract by somebody playing a record backwards? Why is everyone so interested in having The Coop under their thumb for the purpose of soul-stealing when he can't even scare a little kid in the dead of night?

Questions that may be answered in the next issue, I suppose. One hopes it happens sooner rather than later, though, because really, things are getting flat-out silly when they should be heading more in the direction of mass mental cruelty.

    The Final Word:

Hard to say. We shall see what happens. Cool cover, though.

Shouldn't they be more interested in having The Cooper under their wheels than under their thumb? Also, I love it when he pleads guilty to mass mental cruelty.
