The Movie:
Directed by Mototsugu Watanabe, this recent Pink Eiga offering begins with a scene where a woman named Ruriko Aiba (2013 MILF Of The Year Mirei Yokoyama according to the subtitled trailer included in the extras on this disc!) is getting it on with some lucky dude. They finish up and she heads to a nearby cemetery, a place she goes to often to feed stray cats. Here she meets a beautiful scantily clad young woman named Milk (a foxy chick known only as Tia, in her film debut) who is so famished she passes out. Ruriko brings her home despite the protests of her unemployed husband Sohei (Kikujiro Honda) though much to the delight of her twenty-something slacker son, Koichi (Yasunari Kubota). After Milk scarfs down some sushi she tells the family that she is in fact a baby angel and that the reason she doesn't have her wings yet is because God won't give them to her until she's made him happy.
Sohei decides that if Milk is going to stick around that she might as well make herself useful and so he tells her she can stay and work as the family's maid. She agrees and struts around the place wearing only an apron most of the time. Soon enough, Koichi gets her in bed but even after getting it on, still confusingly pines away for a girl he's known forever named Miki (Ayum), even if she is always mean to him. Meanwhile, Sohei starts to wonder why Ruriko is wearing more makeup lately and investing what little money the family has in sexy lingerie. He's distracted when Milk starts wearing some of it, and then he bones her too, but in his heart he knows that his wife is up to something. Will Milk be able to bring the family back together and earn her wings or is everyone just going to have sex and forget about it?
This sixty-one minute dirty movie spends the first fifty-five minutes or so playing things for sexy kicks and silly laughs and on that level, it's pretty entertaining stuff. The cast are all over the top in their respective roles and are more concerned with bumping, grinding and hamming it up than crafting believable characters but in the context of the story, it works just fine. The story keeps things light right up until those last few minutes at which point, pretty much out of nowhere, we get what we can only assume to be an uplifting message as the film takes on a bizarre spiritual tone. Of course, this does tie into Milk's angelic origins but there's more theological implications here than you might assume going into it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a very unusual thing to see in what is essentially a sex film.
As far as the cast is concerned, the men in the movie are hams. They play their characters are goofy, slobbering perverts and they're quite comical as they do so. The ladies have a bit more to do, however. Ruriko Aiba's character actually has a couple of legitimately emotional moments that allow her to act in addition to look good in her birthday suit and she proves more than capable of handling this side of the story. Of course, top-billed Tia is rightly the star of the show. She's remarkably well proportioned and as cute as she is sexy and it's no wonder she spends the entire movie dressed the way she is here. You can definitely see how father and son alike would fall for her based solely on her looks. Her character is pretty one dimensional but she does the 'perpetually perky' thing well enough to make it work. Milk The Maid is a pretty strange film, but more importantly it's a really fun, lighthearted and enjoyable film.
Video/Audio/Extras:
The 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer (a first for the label? Past releases have all been non-anamorphic so this is nice to see!) generally looks pretty good. Colors are nicely reproduced and for the most part this is a bright, colorful looking film. There are some minor compression artifacts but they're never particularly distracting. The image is clean, stable and fairly well detailed. This is a pretty solid transfer.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track on the disc is in Japanese with optional English subtitles. There's a bit of channel separation here and there in regards to the score and the dialogue is clear enough. The subs are easy to read and free of any obvious typos. All in all, the movie sounds fine.
First up, as far as the extras go, is an interview with prolific pink film editor Shoji Sakai entitled The Last Film Hero. Here he talks about how his the amount of film's he would edit in a month is now what he does in an entire year given how film production has declined recently. He then shares some stories about his background and training, his thoughts on the process of editing, some of the films he's worked on and some of the people he's worked with in the industry over the years. It's an interesting piece, and a little sad in its own way.
Aside from that, look for a two trailers and two teasers for the feature, trailers for a bunch of other Pink Eiga releases, some cast and crew bios, a still gallery, menus and chapter stops.
The Final Word:
Milk The Maid is the feel good pink film of the year! It pretty much plays entirely as a sex comedy but works some warm and fuzzy bits into the end that ought to leave a smile on your face. Goofy? Oh yeah, and then some, but the sexploitative aspect of the picture delivers and the whole thing is so ridiculous that it's hard not to have a good time with this one.
