This month's Dark Horse award-winning anthology series ends one serial, starts a couple more, and continues with a couple others. The usual format really, which is a tried and true formula. Why mess with it, right? This issue features a cover from Jerry Ordway, which is in relation to the first story. Let's waste no further time and get to it.

“Semiautomagic” chapter 1, written by Alex de Campi, art by Jerry Ordway. Time to pop a boner; Alex de Campi is at the type-writer again. This time she's serving up a story about a young woman named Alice Creed, a professor at Yale who doubles as a monster killer. She's taken a job that involves a video game that is killing teens as they sit at their computers. And she sees ghosts too, so there's that. Ordway's art is as it has always been: attractive and clean with plenty of fine detail. Ms. De Campi's story'd better be one of those 12-parters, and then released as a single volume.

“Dream Gang” chapter 4 by Brendan McCarthy. The end of part one of this psychedelic and amazingly colorful epic means little to this reader. It looks marvelous (yes, marvelous), but not something remotely interesting that same reader. Its nice to look at though, and there will be a part two for certain.

“Wrestling With Demons” chapter 4, written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, drawn by Andy Kuhn. A little memory time for the cage fighter brings him back to the reality he faces: kill the best demon fighter and save the virgin soul of his daughter Penny. But guess what, tough man? You're dealing with demons. They lie. Kill the best demon, go ahead. A lot of good it will do you. The ones running the fight change the rules as they see fit, and they see it fit to screw you over. This one is a wicked fun tale with great work from Andy Kuhn.

“The Chaining” chapter 2 by Tyler Jenkins. She's on her way to the Chaining Stone to be sacrificed, when the man bringing her on the voyage notices others approaching in their boats. They mean to be mean, but the man won't allow it. That chick is for the wyrm, not those hooligans, and he makes fast work of some of them and its retreat time soon afterward. The art brings a sense of isolation and emptiness, something one can imagine a woman doomed to sacrifice might feel on her way to her death.

“The Mighty” chapter 1, written by Keith Chanpagne, art by Leonard Kirk. A 1950s tales that starts with the murder of a 10-year old boy, and quickly turns into a superhero tale featuring a Superman-type named Alpha One. This guy doesn't seem concerned asking before acting and instead deals justice is he sees fit. This one needs another chapter before an opinion can be formed. Art-wise it seems traditional but certainly functional.

“House of Fun” by Even Dorkin. A collection of 4-panel strips, all unrelated and many are twisted little pieces of dark humor. Eight pages in all, some characters have more than one strip/joke, and it is really enjoyable reading. “Bud and Chub” are a zombie stand-up act; “The Shitty Witch and the Crappy Cat” is just a funny title; “Nothing Can Kill Keith Richards” and “Little Fatty Jumbo” are also particular favorites. They should have a page an issue featuring Dorkin's magic. Truly a blast to read through them.

And most of the issue is a blast to read through. Every story can't rock your world, but there is definitely enough material here for pretty much anyone to enjoy at some level or another. This issue is once again a great mixture of talent and content, and it's so easy to see why this long running series (now in volume three) has had such a long life.
