  • Alice Cooper #4

    Released By: Dynamite Comics
    Release Date: December 10th, 2014.

    The Story:

After the last issue of Dynamite's Alice Cooper series, it looked like things might be on an upswing as the story brought us closer to Alice Cooper, rock 'n' roll legend, and further from Alice Cooper, guy who shows up in little kids rooms but can't scare any of them despite his affiliations with all things nightmare. But if book #4 is any indication, writer Joe Harris is definitely content to take the reader into Silly Town and set up camp for awhile longer. It's quite difficult to figure out what the reasoning would be....die-hard Coop fans are probably going to shake their heads at this material, and it seems to be just a tad too non-comprehensive for younger readers, but hey, what do I know...

Issue #4 finds Alice in The Nightmare Place with his snake Kachina and the young bully named Bart that he's teamed up with, apparently in search of Robbie, the boy who freed him from the record he found at a garage sale. Alice explains The Nightmares to the young lad to no avail, and is met with a barrage of references to ponytails and Dad Rock, a sign that Alice's sorcery of the scary has warn off. As they trudge further into the dark, Alice talks more about nightmares and how people's fear can lead them to do different things, like fantasize about going after bullies with samurai swords and other frightening things.

Harris then gives us a little of what made book #3 good, in the form of another rock concert, but this time it's supposed to be Alice's nightmare...I think. After he realizes that getting his head cut off is not going to cut it for audiences anymore, he decides that his theatrics will be to grow larger and larger everytime there's a guitar solo. But before Alice can put this plan into action...in his nightmare...Kachina the snake shows up to pop his dream bubbles and return him to The Nightmare Place, where it's revealed that Robbie has been found.

Quite honestly, Book #3 seemed like it was going to bring this series around and make it cool, but with this latest issue, Harris has apparently gone back to whatever he was smoking in prior issues. Simply, this comic is a mess of ideas, poorly organized and executed, much like the rest of the series. Damn, make Alice in charge of the Nightmare Place, make him give people nightmares as he travels the country playing music, and have good artwork. Actually, Eman Casallos' artwork is consistent as always, and is the one thing I look forward to in these comics.

The story, however, is about as dumb as the lyrics to Perfect, with its Hip-Hop Hippo Clown.

    The Final Word:

Patience is pretty much at an end with this one.
