Dynamite continues their celebration of 45 years of Vampirella with this anthology (of sorts) featuring tons of comic creators. At least this old Warren Pub's title is given some nice anniversary treatment, unlike another old title that celebrated a big birthday this year. Yes, the air is still chilly from that flaccid affair; poor Uncle Creepy. But this is about Vampi and a book she found in her newly acquired castle, and a book she has been sucked into. She lives the stories within and is up against all sorts of adversaries. Last time she dealt with Blue Beard, and went through what Cinderella endured. And someone is talking to her within the book, narrating and apparently running the show; someone who can get her back to her home planet of Drakulon, provided she lives through the tales.

This issue starts with a great cover by Jay Anacleto and with some recap by Nancy Collins and Jack Jadson. Then it's on to the first tale, “Snow White Revamped” written by Denis St. John and Stephen Bissette and with art by Ronilson Freire. The story is without captions and all the dialogue is told in rhyme. Vampi doesn't like that and neither does this reader. Anyway she battles a vain witch/monster who wants to be the fairest in the land. That won't happen with the raven-haired sex vixen in her midst, you can count on that. The second story is called “Thirsty, Thirsty Town” and is written by Red Sonja's greatest chronologist Gail Simone. Art chores are by Bilquis Evely and is by far the most attractive art in the book. Set in the Old West, a man claims to have captured a mermaid, something Vampirella, decked out in red leather chaps (sadly, with pants underneath), wants to see for herself. So does a small group of no-good gunslingers.

Gail Simone's story leads the pack in this second issue, and will be a tough one to trump. The ending makes it, although Evely's rendition of the mermaid and the final panel really puts this one to the top of list; at least after two issues. “Snow White Revamped” suffers from the rhyming as much as a movie does when the characters belt out a song and as a result was not fun to read through. Cool art though, with a bunch of weirdness to look at, and the final monster is certainly worthy of mention. We said it before and we'll say it again: if this is your first look at Dynamite's new Vampirella material, check out the monthly series first.
