Recently made orphans Zoe and Josiah Latimer need a moment to breathe. They watched their parents be killed as it happened on live TV and are now under the protection of their parent's man-servant Francis and Detective McCarthy, two men who rock some fine facial hair. Protection from what? Only a slew of beasts who want them as dead as their mom and dad.

As they're chased through a building, young Josiah brings up some memories from the days with his uncle Hank, a man who appears to have been someone to help mold the boy and his mushy kid brain. He seems to be calm enough to call such memories up while being chased by monsters, and while being in the middle of Francis and McCarthy tearing up monsters. McCarthy really gets into it too. It is likely he has done this sort of thing before.

Most of this issue is a big bad monster fight, with just a little bit of back story to break up the chaos here and there. It's bloody and moves fast during the action sequences, and coasts along during flashbacks, making for a nice balance. There's a vein of dark humor running throughout as well, lending itself well to some good moments. The artist on this series has an attractive style, with thick lines, angular people, and some interesting panel layouts. The coloring job is helps with the mood as well, being very blue during the fighting, and quite cheery during the flashbacks. The series has started off quite strong, although the story of course hasn't really fleshed itself out. But for now, after only two issues, this reader is hooked.
