Mo'lock and Frank work with the monster warriors to save as many people and monsters as possible, while Cal sets forth to find Hemlock and the demon babies, last seen in Hollywood. Wheatley is with him, looking for some payback of his own for what was done to his family, and the police badge takes a back seat. He's ready to do what he needs to, laws be damned. The three havoc-wreakers are found pretty easily and the end game is set into motion. Quickly getting one of the three targets out of the way, McDonald moves on to the two remaining party members to see what can be done with them.
Really, that's the issue. It's the conclusion to the story, and mainly it's a big and bloody fight between Cal and the three bad guys with an epilogue afterward. A new alliance is solidified; one character departs (perhaps for his own adventures? Let's hope so); and something set into motion a number story arcs ago is addressed (well sort of). Things are looking up for the cursed monster killer and all is right in the world. Well, for a minute or two.
An awesome end to a great story is what this month's offering proved to be. Niles' characters in this title are among his best creations and his writing style for this series maintains a dark sense of humor throughout, while making Cal McDonald an even more interesting character than before. Not that he needed it, but it certainly happened in this story arc. Mitten's artwork is top-notch throughout and his lines, along with Niles' words, equal one heck of a creative team. Fans of the long-running Criminal Macabre should be nothing but totally satisfied with this round of Cal's tales. This fan sure is.
