Griffin Franks is an actor in a successful crap-fest of a film called “Revenge!” as The Revenger. His re-found celebrity as the result of renewing the 1970s exploitation series is something he takes with certain zeal. After the premiere of the movie, he and his girl go to a party at the home of producer Eee Zee Johnson, only to learn his next movie will introduce The Revenger's son, no doubt to replace Franks in any future Revenger movies. This does not sit well with the aging action star, in his 70s, who tries to stay looking young with plastic surgery and hair dye, but that just isn't cutting it.

His young, blonde, trophy, porno actress wife by the name of Candy convinces him to head for Mexico for a radical new treatment that can shave 10 to 15 years off his appearance. Not wanting to be replaced by a younger guy, he agrees to it, but he'll quickly wish he hadn't. Once the procedure gets under way, Griffin Franks gets an earful from Candy, who lets him know she's not very happy in her marriage to him. A grisly event occurs that leaves Franks with a bitter taste in his mouth and one that helps him make a decision that meshes his reality with the fiction of his movies. His face and fingertips removed, he's kept alive in some nutrient bath where he's been for two weeks, but unconscious, in unimaginable untreated pain, and hallucinating.

Candy's boy toy Brad also had his face removed, and had Franks' face sewn on, assuming his identity until Candy can get the will signed over. Then she'll kill Franks and get his fortune and her revenge, then run off somewhere with her gorgeous lesbo gal pal. Seems he broke up her parents' marriage when she was little by screwing her mother, and ultimately being the main reason for the death of her mother. She's got someone else to deal with though: Griffin Franks' ex-wife and mother of his son and daughter. She suspects something is up.

Griffin finally comes too, makes an escape, and with some help locates the doctor to get his face back, as he can't survive much longer without his skin. His face is gone, and so is the face of Brad (accident!), and so the German near-Nazi doctor improvises. It's fucked up.

Armed with a handgun, his dog, a horned-midget (horned, not horny) and a makeshift face, Griffin Franks is primed for revenge on his porno wife for doing what she did to him. Of course she's exacting revenge on Griffin for what he did to her mother, so really they both suck. At any rate, he's lost it upstairs due to the incredible physical pain he's endured, but manages to keep it together with the help of seriously hard drugs. But his reality is still meshing with his movie world, making him all the more dangerous to his enemies.

Griffin and his new allies, plus that Nazi-like doctor who took his face off in the first place, make their escape (well not all of them actually make the escape) and find a plane as a way to make some fast distance. They fly their way from Mexico to Hollywood, making an attention-getting landing, and soon after find some new outfit accessories They'd never get anywhere without drawing suspicion with those blood caked clothes, but their new look doesn't seem to be any less attention getting. Look out, you horrible trophy porno wife; your husband is coming to find you.

Franks' dog was badly wounded, and so he and his midget buddy brought the dog to Franks' veterinarian daughter Alice. The two manage to patch up things just a little bit, but the same can't be said for poor Diablo. But no time for that; Griffin Frank's face is out there on an imposter and his wife is responsible. She needs to pay and she need t o pay dearly. The guy wearing his face, Brad, is starting to lose his marbles and his grip on reality. Candy helps him of the ledge, as they need to go to the Golden Globes and she needs him to keep up appearances until she can get her money.

Griffin, bloody dog face and all, shows up at the Globes looking for Candy and Brad. The incredible pain and the insane amount of drugs he is on are still having an effect on Frank, and he sees things in a majorly fucked manner. He enlists the aid of his producer Eezee Johnson to get him into the awards ceremony and what results is a series of events that would make the Golden Globes actually tolerable to sit through. But this is of course fantasy and that will never happen. At any rate, more blood is spilled than at a slaughterhouse, but sadly none of the celebrities featured were harmed.

A bloody, sex-filled, and just plain nasty tale is what this story is, and it's awesome. It's ultra-violent, with near hardcore sex scenes, and is clearly for the grown-ups so the kids should dig it. Griffin Franks' character is quickly painted as one who has a huge ego and as a result has alienated himself from anyone who's ever cared about him. He's worked to make amends in some departments and to get his career back to full force, but unfortunately for him he left a few open ends.

Jonathan Ross' script absolutely leaves the reader wanting another series. He jumps around a bit from current moments to back a few years, but the story never gets confusing at all. His characterization of Griffin Franks as a washed-up action star on the comeback road is well-written and there are plenty of memorable scenes. The art chores are handled by Ian Churchill (co-colored by Arif Prianto) and his work is excellent, full of detail, and incredibly appealing to the eye. It's always impressive anyway, whether he's drawing a dog being killed or an Amazonian porn star fucking a guy up the poop shoot with a gigantic dong. The story is full of the wet, red stuff and is delightfully gory, as well as vibrantly colored, and the art is so visceral and so bloody you can almost smell the copper. Even the borders are colored, and they help with atmosphere, which totally enhances the overall picture.

The script, the visuals, the unbelievable nastiness, and a lot of “holy shit” moments throughout result in addictive book. “Revenge” is fantastic stuff, bound to offend some, and highly recommended.
