The Movie:
Directed by Francis Leroi for Alpha France and released theatrically in 1977, Voyeur And Spanker Couples (Couples Voyeurs Et Fesseurs) is a sexy sixty-four minute feature shot with all the style and slickness you'd expect if you're familiar with the studio's output.
The story follows a married couple - Henry and his curvy auburn haired wife Helene. Though they are happily married they need a little something to regain the spark that they once knew in the bedroom. Things aren't bad, but they're a bit stale. They find what they're looking for pretty much completely by chance one night when Helene looks out the window of their apartment and spies on a man across the street. She calls him over to take a look for himself. What do they see? An older man just past middle age and a woman that we assume is his wife - and a girl in a blue satin robe. The three of them get it on while Henry and Helene watch and take pictures, and then get busy themselves, turned on immensely by their newfound voyeuristic tendencies.
The next day Henry comes home from work with a surprise - a video camera that they feed into their TV. They set it up at the window and hope for the best. Sure enough, the threesome across the street starts up again after a nice meal and some fine French red wine. Henry and Helene watch as they bust out some whips and toys, once again falling victim to the feelings that arise when they spy on their neighbors.
From here, one thing leads to another and after a scene where they spy on a couple fucking in car, they go home. Of course, eventually you know that Helen and Henry are going to wind up coming face to face with the threesome across the street, and they do, but not before we see a swingers party/orgy/photo session and not before we see the neighbor's daughter make out with her boyfriend in the street. But Henry and Helene… what they don't realize is that they're being watched too - but by who? And why? Well, we find that out after Henry uses a 'super erector' on himself and Helene tries out her new toy. And when we do find out? Stocks and whips and all sorts of kinky stuff goes down!
Full of goofy dialogue ('Aw…. Nothing beats a good old blowjob!') this is nevertheless a fairly engaging story of one couple's journey down a sexual rabbit hole - and it's quite a journey! Henry and Helene go from cold, boring sex to kinky slap and tickle adventures in just over an hour's time and it's all because of their naughty neighbors. This one works in some interesting set pieces, some mild bondage and some solo action and it's definitely got more going on in that regard than your typical seventies French adult film. At the same time, it adheres to the quality productions values and nice cinematography that give European XXX films that certain something that make them different than their American counterparts.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Voyeur And Spanker Couples arrives on MOD/DVD-R in 1.66.1 non-anamorphic widescreen, which would appear to be the movie's original aspect ratio. The image is stable enough and black levels are pretty solid here. Colors look okay even if they do occasionally look shift a bit. There is a bit of visible print damage here and there and there are some minor compression artifacts throughout the presentation as well. This is a decent enough transfer despite its non-anamorphic status.
The disc includes an English language Dolby Digital Mono track but not alternate language or subtitle options. The dialogue is generally pretty clear and the track is free of any hiss or distortion but there's a weird reverb for much of the track that is distracting.
No extras on the disc at all.
The Final Word:
Voyeur And Spanker Couples is pretty great stuff. It's sexy, steamy, kinky and the story is actually reasonably engrossing. The performances are good and the plot goes at a good pace, mixing up the kinky sex you'd expect with enough decent character development to make it all work.
