The second issue of Zander Cannon takes us back to the prison planet where giant monsters who have landed themselves in hot water go to do hard time. We get a quick 'previously in Kaijumax' blurb that reads:

“New inmate Electrogar has proven he's not to be trifled with by attacking the terrifying Warden Kang, which both lands him in solitary and makes him the sworn enemy of the Cryptid Gang.”

That sums up the first issue nicely. When this chapter begins, a man named Gupta is extracting a weapon out of an, erm… orifice… of an imprisoned Kaiju. Flashback and we see Electrogar teaching his kids, Torgax and Vogo, how to swim. He hears a radio broadcast, sends the kids off to safety, and heads to the surface to deal with the problem. It turns out that this is a memory he's having while serving his time in solitary, now over and done with. He's sent back to the general population and on the way back he has a conversation with a more compassionate human who asks him about his kids. Electrogar wants her to go to his island home and bring his kids food, but she knows she can't do it, can't risk her job. She suggests he bring the kids here, but Electrogar refuses that option immediately.

In Gen-Pop, Gupta is suited up and selling 'crackle' to the inmates. Things all too easily get out of hand but not nearly as out of hand as things get when Electrogar reunites with The Creature From Devil's Creek. Meanwhile, Gupta is selling contraband. Later that day the guards find out they're due for an inspection, after which Gupta heads to a casino to settle his tab with Victoria, the mother of one of the inmates he's in charge of 'making things easy' for. It turns out he's light, and that's not good. Back on the prison planet, Electrogar takes things into his own hands, starting a riot in hopes that he can bust out and feed his kids. Gupta sees this as an opportunity…

The awesomeness that is Kaijumax builds nicely off of its debut issue with this second installment, expanding things a bit more so that, yeah, Electrogar's imprisonment is still very much a big part of the story, but now we're being pulled into Gupta's world too. At some point, probably next issue, these threads are going to collide and probably in bad, bad ways but for now it's all about the buildup. There 'heart' that made issue #1 interesting is still here but the story is expanding in interesting ways and that's never a bad thing. What's the point of having supporting characters if they don't support the story? Cannon's art is just as cool here as it was in the first issue too. Great line work, excellent use of bright colors - it's a good looking comic with some neat monsters populating it. There really is a lot to like here. Oh, and read the letters pages. King Kong Escapes is awesome.
