With Out For Blood, Wisconsin's Deathwish have released their debut full length and their first album for new label Beer City Skateboards And Records. A limited edition vinyl release came out on Record Store Day last month, the CD proper hits the streets now.

So what are these guys all about? The band is made up of Bitty on bass and vocals , Guinea Pig Champion on guitar and vocals, S. C. Slaughter on guitar and S. W. MacLeod on drums and they play fairly straight up hardcore punk. There are elements of Poison Idea in here (no surprise when you see the first name in the band roster) and elements of MDC, GBH and some NYHC thrown in for good measure. It's a sound that's more or less tried and true at this point, don't expect any proggy indulgences or experimentation, but Deathwish do what they do extremely well.

Population Zero is the first of the nine tracks that make up Out For Blood, and at almost four minutes long it's definitely the longest song on the album. Some brash guitars are way up front solo to start things off, then the drums kick in and it's full speed ahead. No vocals for the first minute but once they start up it's thrash punk bliss! Track two is Deathwish, a three minute blast that starts off with a kick-ass guitar riff that wouldn't be out of place in a Motorhead song. The bass and the vocals come into the mix at the same time and it's here that you notice MacLeod's drums don't so much thunder or pound the way a lot of drums do, it's more of a punching sound. He plays fast and with some impressive precision and his sound adds a lot to this album.

Track three is the title track, Out For Blood, and it's just over two minutes. It's fast, angry and has a pretty slick melody behind it that sort of sneaks up on you. The vocals really ramp up towards the end here. Six Bullet Roulette really shows off the speed that this band is capable of as they channel a more polished sort of D.R.I. sound with maybe a bit more of a metallic sludge element working its way into the sound. Balance Of Power slows things down a little bit but you'll barely notice as it's still fast and pissed. This is the closest thing to a 'metal' track on the record so it stands out as a little bit different but it's catchy and a very worthy addition to the disc.

With four tracks left we get As The Fire Rises, which starts off with a nice, chunky bass line before the guitars take over. Some crazy backing vocals on this one that the earlier songs didn't really feature, and again, there's a really solid riff that serves as the backbone here. Flat-Line is another barrage of hyper-fast hardcore punk, just under two and a half minutes of righteous anger channeled into some beautiful noise. Cold Day In Hell once again brings the Poison Idea influence to the front, and that's not a bad thing at all. If you're going to wear your influences on your sleeve, make sure your influences are awesome. Unholy Bastards closes the album out with another two and a half minutes of screaming hot pissed off punk rock. It definitely ends things on a high note, which is saying something because this album is consistently solid. These guys are touring a lot this year, check them out. If this debut full length is anything to go by, there's no reason not to expect them to completely destroy!
