  • Three French Hotties

    Released on: April, 2015

Cast: Brigitte Lahaie, Veronique Maugarski, Martine Grimaud, Alban Ceray, Karl, Louison Boutin
    Year: 1977
    Purchase From TLA Video

    The Movie:

Three French Hotties, or Belles d'un soir in its French title, is another release from Alpha France that features the sexy Brigitte Lahaie and some almost equally sexy companions. All three actresses were part of the Cinéma x era in France in the 1970s, and this film fits in well with that tradition. The story begins with three women, bored in their marriages and sick of being enslaved by the men in their lives. They set out to liberate themselves from their husbands and end up finding liberation in other ways as well.

Martine (Martine Grimaud), Mimi (Veronique Maugarski), and Doris (Brigitte Lahaie) are fed up with being the breadwinners while their husbands sit around all day, playing poker and barking demands. The three ladies leave and find an apartment together in the city. They hire a manservant, get themselves fired from their respective jobs, and assert themselves sexually for both pleasure and gain. In the end, they realize that it's not quite as easy to have it all as they hoped, and end up back in the very lives they were trying to run away from.

Directed by Frederic Lansac, using the pseudonym of Claude Mulot, the film has a few sexy scenes and a few that are a bit awkward. Adding to some of the awkwardness is the English dubbing, which is particularly over the top during the full sex sequences. (Notable here is a young man losing his virginity while his proud dad looks on: “Daddy, I think I'm cumming!”) There are some circle jerk moments, a multi-tasking scene that involves a crossword puzzle, and a Tarzan-like yelling session. However, many of the explicit moments work very well. All three actresses are great to look at and experts in their craft. A favorite scene is when Martine seduces a young college student at a café. The set-up for the encounter is seen through the windows of the café, which ends up being a really cool shot with an interesting lack of insight on what is transpiring. The two end up in the bathroom of the café and go to town in one of the most developed and, err, inspiring scenes in the film.

The story itself is compelling on its own, and the eroticism adds to the rewatch value of Three French Hotties. There is only one span of time in the film that lacks any sex and gets a little bogged down by the lagging plot development, but for the most part it works really well as a start to finish movie.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Three French Hotties is presented on a MOD/DVD-R release, 1.66:1 non-anamorphic fullscreen. There is quite a bit of noticeable print damage throughout the film, but it doesn't become distracting. The image is for the most part stable with a fuzzy, soft overtone. Colors are muted but decent, with skin tones being a bit washed out and black levels being a bit weak. Towards the beginning of the film and at other moments there are minor compression artifacts that are visible. All in all the presentation is underwhelmingly decent.

The film is presented in an English Dolby Digital Mono track. The aforementioned dubbing is pretty bad, obvious and at times ridiculous. But the film wouldn't be quite the same with the original French track and subtitles; in this case the dubbing adds to the film instead of taking away. Dialogue is mostly clear with some muted moments, but nothing that obscures comprehension.

There are no extras or menus on this disc. The film starts with an “explicit” version and then repeats after the credits with an “erotic” version.

    Bottom Line:

This Alpha France release of Three French Hotties is a sexy romp with three of the best actresses that 1970s France had to offer. The goofiness at times doesn't take away from the overall style and effective storytelling and sex portrayals. For fans of the Alpha France releases or Brigitte Lahaie, this is a must-see. And hey, even if you just like 70s porn and big titties, you'll want to check it out, too.

      Tormented – Movie Review:

The late Bert I. Gordon’s 1963 horror film, ‘Tormented,’ is an effectively spooky ghost story made with an obviously low budget but no less effective for it.
