Sonja has gotten herself into the ultimate mess trying to beat the curse and her actions have put in her a situation she's not too keen about. It would seem burning your own hands to the point of dripping flesh and bone is not only a surefire way to keep you from using your sword, but also is a quick way to meet death. And guess who the Red Hot One meets? Yeah, you guess it: Death herself. And Death looks interesting similar to someone we all know and love.

Not only do the two meet, they battle. Sonja is not ready to go without one, and the two clash it out in the realm between life and death while talking it all out. Sonja has lots of friends coming to her bedside, where she lay unconscious and dying, unaware of what's going on inside her head. However, one trio of sisters arriving late to the vigil and these visitors seem to know what she is going through. One of the three is more than familiar with Sonja and has gone through a similar sort of ordeal, and if Sonja makes it out of this, she'll be awfully happy to see this person. And if she does pull through, there's still the matter of one Fellan to tend to. You know, the guy Sonja hunted who killed her family? If Sonja dies her vengeance and all she's lived for will be for naught.

With an ending to the story like this one has, it could well be the end of an era for fans of Gail Simone's Red Sonja, but thankfully that it's just the end of an arc. But…it would have been a great finale to her run if it was the end. Just a really satisfying “that story is OVER” feeling that gives a real sense of finality you don't tend to find in an ongoing title. Artwise, things are status quo for the title, with Geovani per usual showing just how perfect he is for drawing Red's adventures. His version of Sonja's version of Death is darkly sexy yet horribly ominous and threatening at the same time. The only disappointment in the issue is the cover, and it's not an easy thing to admit. Usually Jenny Frison's covers are fantastic but this one is just serviceable. It doesn't stand out per normal. Otherwise though, a great issue and a great end to the current story line. Well worth every penny and every second spent on the book.
