Phil Prince made some pretty twisted movies and Vinegar Syndrome, in their infinite wisdom, have opted to bring three of the productions he was in charge of for Avon to DVD in what is by and large the nicest home video presentation this sick little roughies have ever seen. Let's take a look…
SAVAGE SADISTS (1980):
In this thirty-eight minute quickie from Phil Prince, his first film, Martin Patton is a smut video peddler whose wife (Nicole Bernard) is beaten and raped by a pair of tough guys (Danny Stevens and David Christopher) while he's at work fucking his secretary, Janet (who looks fine in her sequined dress and matching top-hat!). Her mistake? She got off of the tacky couch with the picture of a lady and a snake (it's Nastassja Kinski for those keeping score) hanging overtop to answer the door in the first place it seems.
Nicole escapes from the two bastards and heads to Martin's office where he's telling Janet to check her ass over and over again. The tough punks chase her there and when they burst in (well actually he buzzes them in without realizing it) and Martin hides under his desk and watches the pair abuse and rape his wife and secretary, the latter of whom is bound to a giant wooden X and whipped.
Phil Prince's directorial debut is just over half an hour's worth of raunchy rough sex with a few notables in the cast but not much of a plot to hold it all together. The performances aren't half bad though and while some of the cinematography is a little amateur, it moves by at a quick pace and is at least an entertaining little sleaze-fest.
Martin's office is awesome. He's got some maps of Manhattan hanging in the background and he's wearing a white Lacoste shirt while fielding calls from those who want to order smut on VHS or Beta. He also has a calendar on the wall that looks like it's got Boris Vallejo or Olive style fantasy art on it. He's also got a Snoopy tattoo on his arm as all good pornographers do. But yeah, that rape at gun point is a little grisly. She gets roughed up and trash talked and slapped around, which is contrasted with the scenes in which Patton screws his secretary - a much more gentle and passionate encounter. The two rapists in this movie wear the type of tube socks that would make the Polonia Brothers jealous. It all ends with a giant fart. No seriously, it does. A GIANT FART…. let that sink in for a bit.
DEN OF DOMINANCE (1980):
Up next, and made the same year as his debut, is Prince's thirty-seven minute long Den Of Dominance. Here a guy with a moustache and a brown corduroy suit hits up a Times Square bar where the bartender, clad in a STAG magazine shirt, won't serve him 'any hawd lickah.' Instead he offers him up some carnal thrills in place… after putting down a deposit on his credit card. From here? A girl named Bebe shows up to give the customer the 'carte blanche' treatment. This involves dropping his pants while Nicole Bernard bones some other guy on the bar. The bartender might be from Boston with that accent.
A cute but chubby chick in red lingerie heads to the bar, gets a drink, then leaves. The soundtrack is made up of pulsing disco-ish music that might also have typewriter sounds worked into it somehow. It's odd. There's a pile of empty beer cans stacked up behind the bar in front of the mirrored wall for some reason while tube socks and blowjobs abound as the bartender watches on.
The soundtrack switches from disco to electronic when Martin Patton shows up and bones a chick on some gold colored carpet. The bartender pokes around and offers the various participants beverages, and then at thirteen minutes in there's another giant fart. A GIANT FART… let that sink in for a bit. Once the individual couples finish screwing, things get kinky - we get a rough session with Dan Stevens (wearing chains and a leather jock piece) and the gal in the red lingerie (she just wanted a drink) that inspires the other dudes and dames to get busy - it's probably all of the ball sucking that gets everyone all riled up.
That's more or less it. There's no shock ending here… unless you count the tab due at the end of the movie… and the giant fart. A GIANT FART… has that sunk in yet?
DAUGHTERS OF DISCIPLINE (1983):
The third and final feature, the forty-two minute Daughters Of Discipline, which starts off with a shot from the east of Manhattan that tracks the island and then cuts to the door of a home. Here we see two young ladies, Glenda (Victoria Sands) and Rhoda (Robin Thorne), peeking through a bondage magazine - hey, it's the stuff that mom and dad are into - we hear them say. Then they make out, because it makes them horny. Tube sucks and muff, tube sucks and muff.
After that prolonged lesbian encounter, in which each lady services the other atop a dumpy little bed, they call a guy named John (David Christopher) - they've got two pussies that are wet and hot but they're missing a big stud like him to fill them up! He shows up and then, after getting some ideas from the magazine, they have a three-way. Is that Scott Baio on the poster in the background? Yes, that's Scott Baio on the poster in the background. Beside him is a framed picture of a strawberry and a poster of Miss Piggy from The Muppets (seriously). Tube socks and muff and dong and Scott Baio and Muppets.
From there? Mom (Nicole Bernard) and Dad (David Ruby) show up, but not before the girls have had John tied up on a giant wooden X and then put on their finest early eighties trashy lingerie. They rough him up and whip his dink and then put some nipple clamps on him and after the parents bust in, well, dad yells out 'WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? YOU KIDS COME HOME FROM COLLEGE AND USE ALL MY STUFF?â€
Yep. From there? It's an incestuous Gang bang on that couch with the snake lady poster hanging over it that we saw in the first feature. Lots of ass slapping and daddy-dominance and hey, some fluffy red high heel shoes too. No giant farts this time, sorry kids.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Presented in an “all new 2k scan and restoration from ultra-rare 16mm archival elements†the three fullframe presentations included on this disc look quite good considering how these movies have looked in the past. There are some vertical scratches here and there but the images are surprisingly stable, clean and well detailed. Colors look pretty natural here, we get decent black levels and there are no problems with any compression artifacts. Yeah, if you're familiar with how various Avon titles have been treated on DVD over the years, there's no doubt you'll be quite pleased with VS's efforts here. The movies look good.
The Dolby Digital Mono audio options on the disc are fine. There's a bit of a hollow sound to some of the dialogue that no doubt stems back to the way that the sound was recorded here but there aren't ever any problems understanding the performers at any given point. Levels are properly balanced and there are only a few sporadic moments where any audible hiss is present. Again, this is a big step up from most of the past Avon movie's released on DVD.
There are no extras here outside of a static menu offering feature selection.
The Final Word:
Vinegar Syndrome's DVD release of three Phil Prince directed roughies is a good one. We get three delightfully sleazy Phil Prince quickies offered up in very fine condition indeed. The movies are entertaining, skuzzy and occasionally even sexy but always entertaining and the transfers here are surprisingly good. If roughies are your thing, get in on this action.
