When the first issue of this new mini-series begins, a pair of cloaked men is running for their lives through the hallway of a strange building - a temple or church of some sort. They soon come to a dead end, quite literally, as a familiar looking beast with a spiked tail makes short work of one of them. The other? The cloak comes off and we can tell by his pale skin, his fangs and his long claw-like fingernails that he isn't human. He's ready to put up a fight and when instinct kicks in, he tries to bite the alien on the neck. Bad move - that aliens' got acid for blood.

Meanwhile, in the far reaches of space, a ship transporting Vampirella prepares to dock at a research base on Mars. She enters the base, greets the team of scientists there to attend to her, and gets to work. It turns out that under the base they're currently in, there's an older base, one that is a few thousand years old. Vampirella has arrived to help them explore the structure and figure out what it is and what it means.

They suit up, because it's evidently very cold down in 'the catacombs' and start their exploration. Vampirella notices some ancient text scrawled into the walls, while her human counterparts note how eerie the bodies stuck in what looks like some sort of webbing are. Soon enough they discover a room full of alien eggs, and those eggs have been waiting a long, long time to hatch. Facehuggers ran rampant, and, well, you know what happens when facehuggers attach themselves to people…

This is a decent enough first issue. You know once Vampirella arrives on the planet and the scientists mention the catacombs how it will tie into the opening scene and you know that they'll wind up stuck down there once they head inside to check it out. On that level it's a fairly typical Aliens store. What makes it different here is the presence of Vampirella. She's been brought in because there is a connection between the vampires that were obviously hunted by the alien and the catacombs area, but as to what that connection is, we don't know. And there's the mystery. Her presence also sets off some of the human scientists in ways that make sense - if you were stuck underground with a vampire, you might wonder what would happen if that vampire got hungry, right? As a set up for things to come, this first issue is off to an interesting start.

Javier Garcia-Miranda's artwork is pretty solid, assisted quite nicely by some solid digital coloring from InLight Studios. There's some good detail here and he draws the alien really well. There are moments in the first half of the issue where you wish things were a bit more shadowy and a bit more atmospheric than they are, visually speaking, but once we head below the planet's surface, we get there. Also worth mentioning is the kick-ass cover from Gabriel Hardman, beautifully colored by Jordan Boyd.
