A year or two ago, Cinema Sewer's Robin Bougie released a book called Graphic Thrills that shed light on the poster art of vintage American porno movies. More than just a coffee table book or a collection of admittedly fascinating poster art, the book was packed full of reviews, interview snippets, opinion pieces and random bits and pieces of just generally interesting trivia relating not only to the movies covered in the book but the filmmakers and performers that made them as well.

Now that 2015 is coming towards its end, Bougie unleashes a second volume - one hundred and forty-four full color movie poster reproductions on thick, glossy paper stock with yet more writing about the movies and the people who made them covered therein. It's a great thing. A mix of eye candy and well written, well researched insight into what continues to make vintage porn a draw for cult film enthusiasts (and general all around perverts) the world over. Given the interest in the cinematic smut of the golden years of the adult film industry in cult film communities online and off these days, now would seem the perfect time for the release, which is handled once again through FAB Press.

It'd be easy to say something like 'let it suffice to say if you liked the first volume you'll like this one too' and leave it at that but no, this book deserves more than that. It all starts out with a passionate introduction from Bougie that not only gives a somewhat concise rundown of what makes vintage smut interesting and culturally important but which offers up some thoughts on the promotional art too: why it matters, why it should be explored, stuff like that. It's a good piece mixing input from different interviewees he's talked to over the years with his own insight into smut and the social mores surrounding it, and it effectively sets the tone for the pages to follow.

And those pages that do follow? Why, they're pure gold. As you flip through this tome your eyes dart from one piece of art to the next. Some of these are flat out gorgeous, like the painted piece for The Incredible Sex-Ray Machine or what looks like a charcoal sketch on the poster for Tangerine. Others are rudimentary, like the black and white photo/text piece for the gay classic Kansas City Trucking Co. Others still are goofy - like the painted poster for Aunt Peg featuring a woman who looks nothing like Juliet Anderson straddling a neon sign that forms the title or the piece for one of the sequels, Aunt Peg's Fulfillment, where we see two people who are supposed to be Juliet Anderson and John Leslie enjoying a tender embrace. Whoever painted this had evidently never seen Juliet Anderson or John Leslie before, the likeness is just not there. But stuff like that is half the fun of a book like this. Sometimes things get surreal, like the poster for Blue Magic where two lovers go at it inside what looks like a blue Christmas light with the screw in top forming some sort castle! Sugar Britches uses an awesome flapper/art deco sort of style in its lettering that you can't help but want to star at while Lips just plays Vanessa Del Rio's kisser inside a lipstick lip print (simple, but very effective). Every poster here has its own thing going on and it's great.

Speaking of which, here's the rundown of the movies covered in this second volume of Graphic Thrills:

I Want You! / All About Sex Of All Nations / Lady Lazu's Daughter / The Incredible Sex-Ray Machine / The Liberated Woman / Sex In The Comics / Forced Entry / Grace's Place / Honey Buns / Inside Georgina Spelvin / Illusions Of A Lady / Mrs. Barrington / Teenage Stepmother / Couples / Heavy Load / Highway Hookers / In Sarah's Eyes / The Journey Of O / Sodom And Gomorrah: The Last Seven Days / Sometimes Sweet Susan / Wet Rocks / The Autobiography Of A Flea / Baby Rosemary / The Bride's Initiation / Call Me Angel, Sir! / Coming Attractions / Her Last Fling / Hot Summer In The City / The Joy Of Letting Go / Kansas City Trucking Co. / Lollipop Palace / Overnight Sensations / Spirit Of Seventy-Six / Sweet Cakes / Sweet Punkin / Teenage Surfer Girls / Thunderbuns / 7 Into Snowy / Captain Lust / Dutch Treat / Expectations / Feelings / Foxy Lady / French Teen / Long Jeanne Silver / Oriental Babysitter / Reflections / The Secret Dreams Of Mona Q / Sharon / Sweet Secrets / A Teenage Pajama Party / The Ultimate Pleasure / Virgin Dreams / Candy Stripers / Deep Roots / Descendance Of Grace / Disco Lady / Double Your Pleasure / Jungle Blue / Sensual Encounters Of Every Kind / Sheer Panties / Skin Flicks / Swedish Sorority Girls / A Taste Of Sugar / The Untamed / Candy Goes To Hollywood / Come Under My Spell / Deep Rub / French Finishing School / Heavenly Desire / Hot Child In The City / Inside Desiree Cousteau / The Little Blue Box / Lusty Princess / Frat House / Pink Champagne / Pleasure Palace / Pro Ball Cheerleaders / Shoppe Of Temptations / Small Town Girls / Summer School / Tangerine / Three Ripening Cherries / American Pie / Aunt Peg / Blue Ecstasy / The Filthy Rich / The Grease Monkeys / Silky / Sugar Britches / Vista Valley P.T.A. / Aunt Peg's Fulfillment / Blue Magic / The Dancers / Exhausted / Flash / A Girl's Best Friend / Lips / Nightdreams / Peaches And Cream / Rhinestone Cowgirls / The Seven Seductions Of Madame Lau / Sexual Heights / Casanova Part II / Expose Me Now / The Girl From S.E.X. / Inspirations / Irresistible / Mascara / Private Pleasures Of A Woman / Skin Deep / Bodies In Heat / 'Doing It' / Feels Like Silk / In Love / Night Hunger / Pleasure Zones / A Taste Of Money / Girls On Fire / Hypersexuals / Naked Scents / Beverly Hills Exposed / Bordello: House Of The Rising Sun / Tasty / Ten Little Maidens

As to the text in the books, it's just as fascinating as that which was included in the first volume. As you read through the book you'll find input from people like directors Carter Stevens, Shaun Costello, Chuck Vincent, Gail Palmer, Howard Ziehm and more. Granted, the 'input' is a mix of interviews Bougie did himself, interviews from older reference books and adults magazines or snippets from podcasts and web based conversations but it's all presented in a context that makes sense. We also hear from performers like Richard Pacheco, C.J. Laing, Marc Stevens, Andrea True, Eric Edwards, Sandi Foxx, Leslie Bovee, Kay Parker, Jeanne Silver, Linda Wong, Veronica Hart, Brooke West, personal favorite Desiree Cousteau, Lisa De Leeuw, Candida Royale, Dorothy LeMay, Vanessa Del Rio, Juliet Anderson, Kelly Nichols, Ginger Lynn to name a few.

As you leaf through the pages you also get input from writers / reviewers / historians / archivists like Joe Corey, Joe Rubin, Jeremy Feist, yours truly, Tony Lovett, and of course Bougie himself. On top of that, occasionally Bougie is even able to track down the artists responsible for this work, so we get some thoughts from Chet Collom on his poster for The Incredible Sex-Ray Machine and artist Nancy Villagran on her art for Small Town Girls. It would have been great to have more input from the artists on their work included here, but given that much of the stuff wasn't signed and that records for this material are sketchy when they even exist in the first place, it's pretty amazing that any of it is here at all.

All in all, it's a pretty packed edition. Whether you're a poster art aficionado, a dirty movie fan or a cult cinema nerd hungry for trivia, opinion and general information this book belongs on your shelf. Get it now, you won't regret it.
