The forth issue of this series brings us back to Mars where a pair of scientists fall prey to the alien that's running loose in the area. They meet a pretty grisly end… it's a big, bloody mess, actually.

In the above ground command center, Norm and Tucker discuss what they assume to be Lars' fate - asphyxiation underground - and debate how to best explain this to his wife and the rest of the crew set to arrive shortly. They did what they did because they had to, and now Norm has to suit up and go confirm that the thing they tried to kill is actually dead.

But of course Lars and Vampirella are not dead or the series would be over by now. They're still kicking underground, trying to figure out how to get back up to the planet's surface all while avoiding the alien that they knows is out there. They figure out their escape, or so it seems, but quickly learn firsthand that there are quite a few of these things running around. Vampirella gets injured in an attack but they manage to fend them off long enough to make it to the kill scene that was saw in the opening pages. Again, it's a big, bloody mess.

While Lars and Vampirella are happy to have made it above ground, they know they've been followed and the only way that they can get to the base is if Vampirella's injured wing can heal. How is that going to happen? She needs to feed…

This issue ramps up the action and alien mayhem considerably, building off of the earlier issues that, in hindsight, did a pretty solid job of building up to this. Where it'll go from here remains to be seen, obviously, and it's probably a safe bet that Vampirella's not going to be killed off, but as to the human characters? Don't be so sure, Bechko has proven at this point in the run that none of them are safe, even if they think they are. There's a nice twist in the last few pages of this issue as well, the kind of twist that proves everyone involved in this story is in genuine peril and that the original reason they all gathered on this planet in the first place is still very much an issue worth considering.

So yeah, solid suspense here as far as the story goes, while Garcia-Miranda's artwork continues to show the same strengths and weaknesses that it did in the first three installments. The aliens and related creatures look great, the layouts are good and facial expressions well rendered and nicely detailed by the backgrounds look a little sparse considering the locations involved in the story. The good outweighs the bad here, however, and if you're a fan of either one of the two franchises being explored in this crossover, this series remains a fun read worth checking out.

Yeah, I really dug this issue - probably the best one so far. The art is uneven maybe but it's mostly pretty good, at least when the aliens are around. The next issue should be interesting, what with the new element of you-know-who being awake.

Yeah, I'm really intrigued to see where she takes it too. Great ending in this one.
