Picking up where the first four issues left off, Vampirella and Lars are in big trouble - a hybrid alien queen/vampire has emerged from whatever Hell could have spawned it and it is not in a very good mood. They run and one of the planet's vampire minions turns into a bat and gives chase, catching our heroes in its claws and whisking them off to relative safety, or at the very least somewhere that the queen can't get to.

Inside the tunnels below the base, Vampirella talks to the creature once it reverts back to its humanoid form. She thanks the vampire for saving them but quickly learns the truth as to its motives.

On the ship that is orbiting the planet, Sarah is arguing with Jean. She's convinced that Lars is still alive down there and doesn't want to give up hope. The guys at mission control realize that Marta never came back once her horticulture shift ended… and that their communications with the ship have been cut off. They use the security cameras to check out the garden and quickly find out what it is that killed her.

Back in the tunnels of the base, Vampirella and the vampire talk about the planet's past, how and why this race of vampires colonized Mars and how this lead to digging for water under the surface. It was here that they discovered that there were 'things' intending to colonize this planet long before they arrived. But of course, once that back story is over, we realize Vampirella, Lars and their vampire ally are not nearly as safe as they had hoped…

With one issue left to go in this six issue mini-series, writer Corinna Bechko ramps up the action quite a bit, pulling together the different threads that have been evolving over the four issues prior and weaving them into a pretty satisfying whole. Alliances are formed and dashed, there's betrayal and there's suspense but so too is there some nice back story provided that helps fill in some of the blanks left open by earlier installments. Some moments of genuinely disturbing alien action don't hurt things here either, but they're not crammed in simply to provide the requisite blood and guts you expect from an Aliens or Vampirella story, but rather they serve to propel the story nicely.

The art from Javier Garcia-Miranda is on par with what we've seen before - nicely drawn characters, really detailed and ferocious looking aliens and vampires, and somewhat plain looking backgrounds. But it works, most of the time quite well, while the coloring InLight Studios is also solid. Once again, the issue is wrapped up under a gorgeous cover courtesy of Gabriel Hardman.

The next issue will be the last - expect big things…
