The second in Dark Horse Comics' AVP Life And Death series of four issue runs is Prometheus: Life And Death and follows in the wake of the recently completed Predator: Life And Death storyline. A text page advises us:

“This story takes place approximately forty-three years after the events in the motion picture Aliens (and just over a year after the events in Fire and Stone). Dispatched to Tartarus (LV-797) to investigate unauthorized prospecting on the Weyland-Yutani-owned planet, Captain Paget and her platoon of Colonial Marines discovered three surviving claim jumpers from the Seegson
Corporation—and a group of hostile life forms: the Predators. Also discovered was a huge spacecraft of unknown origin, which Lorimer, the Weyland-Yutani representative embedded with the marines, wanted for his company. A battle ensued between the marines and the Predators
over possession of the spacecraft. The marines suffered heavy casualties, but eventually one team of marines was able to secure the ship and take off, while the remainder of the marines made it back to their own ship, the Hasdrubal, still in orbit above the contested world…”

When the issue begins, Paget is writing up a report on the events that took place with the Predators for the USMC Operations department, advising them of the dangers surrounding all of this. When she finishes, she talks to Ancane, the ship is ready to head home on her word, Delaria is ready to go as well. They have no synthetics around to help them, but the ship is fairly automated. Lorimer is onboard as well, and Paget has no problem chastising him for towing the company line as stringently as he does but he assures her that her people did not die in vain, that the technology they've salvaged will advance things for all of mankind.

She looks out from their ship towards the alien ship that they're accompanying, and she radios to Roth who should be down there waiting on her transmission. He's there, with a few other USMC team members, waiting on Singer to get everything operational. Everything is operational except for the communications technology. At least none that they can find. But the ship is so huge that they decide to explore a bit and see if they can come up with anything. While poking around they notice that the bullet holes from Humble's shooting spree hit a pod of sorts, and that it's leaking something akin to amniotic fluid. The pod opens and a familiar looking humanoid figure emerges - and it's not happy. A firefight breaks out and Indelicato is killed by the thing.

The marines retreat. With no communications working, they're trapped - but they are reasonably well armed. And then the ship starts moving…

It'll help if you're familiar with the events from the Fire And Stone storyline and the Predator: Life And Death storyline before jumping into this one, as there's a lot of continuity at play here and new readers could very well wind up more than a little confused. However, Abnett's storyline builds off of this continuity nicely, and it sets up some interesting things to come. Tough to say where it's going to go from here, but this first issue does what a first issue should do, and that's leave us in suspense as to what the future holds.

Andrea Mutti's art is pretty solid. The book doesn't always look quite as shadowy or as dark as other recent entries in the AVP universe have looked, but the larger outer space panels have nice scope to them. Detail is good and there's a decent sense of movement to the action scenes. At the end of the book we get a text piece that explains the challenges of bringing new artists on as the different installments of this run are being written. Some of Mutti's character sketches are included here, which is cool to see.
