When the first issue of this new mini-series begins, a pair of cloaked men is running for their lives through the hallway of a strange building - a temple or church of some sort. They soon come to a dead end, quite literally, as a familiar looking beast with a spiked tail makes short work of one of them. The other? The cloak comes off and we can tell by his pale skin, his fangs and his long claw-like fingernails that he isn't human. He's ready to put up a fight and when instinct kicks in, he tries to bite the alien on the neck. Bad move - that aliens' got acid for blood.

Meanwhile, in the far reaches of space, a ship transporting Vampirella prepares to dock at a research base on Mars. She enters the base, greets the team of scientists there to attend to her, and gets to work. It turns out that under the base they're currently in, there's an older base, one that is a few thousand years old. Vampirella has arrived to help them explore the structure and figure out what it is and what it means.

They suit up, because it's evidently very cold down in 'the catacombs' and start their exploration. Vampirella notices some ancient text scrawled into the walls, while her human counterparts note how eerie the bodies stuck in what looks like some sort of webbing are. Soon enough they discover a room full of alien eggs, and those eggs have been waiting a long, long time to hatch. Facehuggers ran rampant, and, well, you know what happens when facehuggers attach themselves to people…

On the ground, however, things aren't so hot - they've gone into that underground chamber with Vampirella and those that were hit by facehuggers are now giving birth to chestbursters - that includes Vampirella. She tells Lars to strip Jake because he's got the longest suit. He does what he's told and they fasten a bandage around her rib cage to slowdown the bleeding and that allows her to heal, but she needs blood to get back into prime shape. Lars can give that to her. They need her to be able to put a stop to the alien menace to prevent it from spreading to the base above ground.

In that base the rest of the science crew wait. When they get a video transmission and see what happened they start to suspect that the carnage was caused by Vampirella. They say they're sending a team down, but Vampirella and Lars want to stop that… and then Lars realizes his wife is on her way to the same base that lies just above them, and just above the aliens.

The team head into the underground chamber, find Lars and Vampirella trying to get them to go back, and draw their weapons on them. As heavily as armed as they are though… there's aliens down there, aliens that have had enough time to get to full size - this could get messy.

Underground, Vampirella and Lars are trying to figure out how to get out of the catacombs. They rig up the video system using the batteries from their flashlight as a power source, and it's then, once they have access to the mapping system, that they realize how massive this compound is. Then they notice something strange on the video system's heat sensors… something that may tie into what those aboveground saw on the video screen. Those things that the humans sealed into the lower levels are being hunted by something otherworldly.

The ship circling the base, waiting for an okay to land? The people on board, including Lars' wife, Sarah, are wondering what's going on down there. She wants to disobey orders and land, she knows they're in danger, but her plan is shut down. As a compromise she decides to take the excavation rig down. Tucker, at mission control, however… he's got a plan to get rid of whatever it is underground causing all these problems, and if Lars and Vampirella get taken out, well that's a small price to pay in his eyes to save the lives of everyone else involved in this mess.

Vampi and Lars, however, have got problems of their own to deal with… problems with spiky tails and green acidic blood.

In the above ground command center, Norm and Tucker discuss what they assume to be Lars' fate - asphyxiation underground - and debate how to best explain this to his wife and the rest of the crew set to arrive shortly. They did what they did because they had to, and now Norm has to suit up and go confirm that the thing they tried to kill is actually dead.

But of course Lars and Vampirella are not dead or the series would be over by now. They're still kicking underground, trying to figure out how to get back up to the planet's surface all while avoiding the alien that they knows is out there. They figure out their escape, or so it seems, but quickly learn firsthand that there are quite a few of these things running around. Vampirella gets injured in an attack but they manage to fend them off long enough to make it to the kill scene that was saw in the opening pages. Again, it's a big, bloody mess.

While Lars and Vampirella are happy to have made it above ground, they know they've been followed and the only way that they can get to the base is if Vampirella's injured wing can heal. How is that going to happen? She needs to feed…

Bechko's script brings this mix of sci-fi, action and horror to a pretty damn satisfying conclusion. There are a few unexpected surprises lurking in the pages of this final issue and at the same time the earlier threads of the story are tied together nicely. Things are left open enough if they decide to do a sequel but for now, this marks the end and it's been a good read. The story has put entertainment front and center but at the same time has been able to deal with themes of xenophobia and discrimination in interesting and appropriate ways and the end result is a comic that's a fair bit smarter than you might think.

Javier Garcia-Miranda's has been decent, but again, some of the backgrounds are too sparse and some of the panels are less claustrophobic and atmospheric than they should be. Nice detail and flow on the aliens and facehuggers though, and the human and vampire characters are really well rendered. Wrap it all up underneath a slick cover from Gabriel Hardman colored by Jordan Boyd and this last issue of Dynamite and Dark Horse Comics' Aliens Vampirella series winds up a winner.

This hardcover collection not only reprints all six issues of the limited series but also the covers. Along with that content we get a collection of sketches from Garcia-Miranda and a few variant covers as well.
