Journey back to Yaphank, New York in October of 1939. It's 2 a.m. and Camp Siegried, where this all started. Where The Shadow laid waste to a Nazi rally. Only now, as he's journeyed through The Twilight Zone, we find him held captive, shackled to a wall, as much a prisoner to his own body as to the walls that surround him.

Kreisleiter Wilhelm Penzler arrives in the cell. He intends to kill The Shadow and announces as much, and tells him that his associates are also imprisoned. The Shadow will be executed at dawn and it will be filmed. Penzler leaves, a young Nazi soldier left in charge of the captive vigilante. Bad move - The Shadow plays some head games with the young man, Peter, agitating him just enough to get him to react, and using that moment of weakness to control his mind. He gets the information he wants - the location of the poison gas that these Nazi's intend to use and then coercing the boy into letting him out of his metal binds.

The Shadow skulks about the grounds of the camp, using Peter to find Margo and Shrevvy. And then, against his better judgment, he releases Peter from his control, having now gained a better understanding of how and why the young man fell in with the Nazi's that The Shadow now intends to eliminate. The Shadow knows many things, not the least of which is that this young man doesn't need hate to be strong. And then he lights the fuse…

Avallone's story ends on a high note, going into some surprisingly dark territory at times as it deals with how and why people turn to racism and hate as an answer to their problems. The first three issues didn't really point in that direction but it's nice to be surprised with intelligent writing and smart characters - and that's what we get here. The loose ends are tied up rather well and the finale offers up all of the action and suspense you'd hope for in a good Shadow yarn. Acosta's art remains pretty solid. Characters are well illustrated, the action scenes pack a strong punch and the backgrounds and locations are nicely detailed. Omi Remalante colors the pencils nicely, and once again Francesco Francavilla provides a wonderfully trippy and entirely awesome cover piece.

A fine finish to a bizarre but wholly entertaining four issue crossover mini-series!
