The third issue of the second run of Dark Horse Comics' AVP Life And Death series of four issue storylines, Prometheus: Life And Death, continues, picking up where the Predator: Life And Death storyline ended and where the first issue left off. A text page advises us that after the ship holding the Colonial Marines was re-routed to LV-223..

“While the rest of the marine contingent struggled to keep up with the alien vessel in their own ship, the Hasdrubal, those trapped onboard with the Engineer hid within the alien ship's vast interior. Once on the new planet, the humans almost immediately encountered the xenomorph terrors that resided there, only to be saved by the survivors of a previous mission—and their Predator companion, “Ahab.” But saved does not necessarily mean safe…”

So when this issue begins, well, it's complicated. The surviving human contingent has teamed up, sort of, with a Predator. As they make their way across the jungles of the planet, xenomorph's attack, but the Predator, who they've started referring to as Ahab, is able to make pretty short work of them. They really don't trust him but as he's the best hunter around, he does come in handy.

Foster leads Melville and the others to her 'home' where she lives with Galgo, Jill, Chris and, yes, Ahab. It's not much to look at but it is fortified and as safe as it gets around here. So the two crews cooperate - after all, they're both basically stuck - and fill one another in… one was dealing with the aliens, the other with the Predators. Now they've both got to deal with the Engineers. Roth tells them that there's still hope that Paget and the USMC might be able to find them if they can get the beacon working, but if the beacon summons the Engineers, maybe they need to rethink this. Ahab was able to kill one of them but given their use of the accelerant, they continue to evolve very quickly. Given what the Engineers are capable of, they hypothesize that maybe the 'bugs' are their creation, and that maybe they are too - but given recent events, it's clear that if the Engineers did create them, they're no longer happy with the results of their work.

Or maybe they're just protecting them from the 'fire of the Gods…'

Things are tying together pretty well at this point, Abnett's script bringing the threads of the previous AVP storylines into what is clearly becoming a more cohesive whole - it works well. This is starting to get tense and exciting but so too does it do a really interesting job of exploring the very idea of the Prometheus concept in the first place. By the time this issue is over with, we know more about a few of the human characters and we realize what dire straits they are in, but we also know that they are not completely without hope (just almost completely without hope). The Engineer is clearly up to something - the fourth and final issue should, at least in theory, let us in on what that is. Andre Mutti's artwork, with nice coloring from Rain Beredo, does a great job of bringing Abnett's storyline to life. Lots of nice detail here and some great large panel layouts for a few key sequences that use very little dialogue to effectively convey what happens (no spoilers, sorry).
