“On a seemingly deserted beach, Conan and his comrades discover several pungent and disturbing skeletal totems, and shortly thereafter a band of Turanian warriors ambushes the group. With Conan preoccupied by dispatching the Turanians, a monstrous sea troll—one of a pair of creatures that set out the totems— emerges from the waters and deals a vicious blow to Conan's head. Unconscious, the Cimmerian is taken to the trolls' lair, where their mother awaits…”

Blood In His Wake Part 3, opens in a palace where Lord Jehungir Agha Of Kharwarism is informed by Ghaznavi how his men were slaughtered by the Koazak's that they were sent to assassinate. He's upset, but informed by Ghaznavi that the Hetman's son is willing to kill to attain power and once he does, that's their time to strike.

Meanwhile, Conan wakes up. His hands are bound with rope and he's in bad shape, but he's alive, locked away in the belly of an old ship, a ship that's definitely seen better days. His captor? A massive female monstrosity of unknown origin, a green and hulking thing, a sea hag who wants Conan to sire some sons for her. He's repulsed, until she crams a fish down his mouth, at which point he sees her as a beautiful and curvaceous blonde woman, very human indeed. Taralsan and Oksana, who Conan had recently fought alongside, are also captives, as is one of their enemies. They are bound and held along the shore, not in the ship with our barbarian hero. They can't help but notice the skeletons littered on the ground all around them and figure that they are not long for this world. And they might be right. The sea hag's three sons are watching over them, feasting on horse meat until their mother gives them permission to fill their bellies full of long pig. The beasts leave and it is then that Taralsan is told the truth, that his own brother, Kyrylo, orchestrated the ambush that landed them here in the first place.

And just then, Conan escapes from the belly of the ship. The sea hag orders her sons to give chase, but Conan has figured out the truth about these creatures and once he finds a sword, all bets are off.

Another fine installment of this latest ongoing Conan series from Dark Horse. Cullen Bunn's script is doing a fine job of building the conspiracy, setting up what will surely be a pretty serious battle between brothers Taralsan and Kyrylo over who will ultimately succeed their father. As to how and when that'll happen, we'll just have to keep reading but for now, this third chapter ends the immediate threat posed by the hag and her sons but sets up something potentially more dangerous in the issues to come. Loyalties will surely be tested, but there's more to all of this than just backstabbing and betrayal - it would seem that magic will also play a part. And we all know how Conan feels about magic!

It's a fun read, really entertaining stuff with lots of action and intrigue and Sergio Davlia illustrates it beautifully. His penciling is hyper-detailed and he's got a great sense of how to portray movement and action within the panel. The hag characters are appropriately grotesque, Conan appropriately burly and everyone else nicely rendered as well. There's good background detail here and some appreciable attention paid to both costuming and architecture. Michael Atiyeh does a fine job coloring the book, bringing Davlia's work to vibrant life without overdoing it. The fantastic cover piece from Admira Wijaya wraps it all up perfectly!
