Cobra Skulls - Bringing The War Home
Released by: Fat Wreck Chords
Released on: 12/18/2010
Purchase From Amazon
Having built a solid following since forming in 2005, Reno, Nevada's Cobra Skulls have recently left Red Scare Industries and signed with Fat Wreck Chords, following up a handful of singles and EP's and their two full length albums, 2007's Sitting Army and 2009's American Rubicon with this new five song EP, Bringing The War Home.
Diehard fans of the band will already recognize two tracks off of this release. Hot Sands has been played live over the last few months and appeared on the recent Fat compilation, Fat Music Vol. 7: Harder, Fatter + Louder! alongside Teenage Bottlerocket, who were signed around the same time, who were also on Red Scare, and who have toured with Cobra Skulls a few times now. On top of that, their cover of Bad Religions Give You Nothing (from their Epitaph release, Suffer), which features Fat Mike himself on backing vocals, was recorded for Germs Of Perfection, a Bad Religion tribute album that was released digitally by Spin Magazine in late 2009. Both tracks are excellent, with the Bad Religion cover staying faithful enough to the original to sound familiar but performed with the band's own distinct sound, which has been honed to perfection thanks to a rigorous touring schedule over the last three years.
As is the norm with the band, the lyrics, courtesy of vocalist/bass player Devon Peralta, are an interesting mix of opinion and social commentary; left leaning politics shot at point blank range at well deserving targets such as war, the direction of modern day America, and similar subjects. Think The Dead Kennedys mixed up with Against Me! with elements of The Clash and various folk and country influences and you'll come close to figuring out what this band is about. This is a band that is hard to nail down. Peralta is prone to breaking into Spanish in the middle of a song while guitar player Adam Beck has a distinct and interesting guitar sound that can go from Ramones style three chord punk to more complicated picking and back again without sounding disjointed. The drums back it all up with a frenetic rhythm that provides a thick backbeat that'll have your foot tapping in now time.
The three brand new tracks - the opening Doomsday Parade, the second track Ice In The Night, and the fifth and final track Life In Vein - will instantly appeal to the already converted and probably earn them a few new fans along the way if the music can get out to those that'll appreciate it. Fat's distribution will probably help a lot with that, so expect big things from these guys in the years to come. Bringing The War Home has one major flaw, however, that being that it's just too damn short. The EP kicks things into high gear and keeps it there for five tracks straight, but it's not enough, it leaves you wanting more. Until the next full length comes along, however, it's a pretty bad ass appetizer.
Cobra Skulls' Bringing The War Home is available on CD, Vinyl and digital download. This review is based on a digital download provided by Fat Wreck Chords.-

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM have been at this since the early 1980s and are probably best remembered for giving bassist Jason Newstead to METALLICA. Their first two records - Doomsday For The Deceiver and No Place For Disgrace are considered classics of the thrash metal genre but like many other acts that started strong on an indie label and wound up on a major label during the thrash signing boom ...-

Purchase From Amazon Recorded in Bulgaria - where life is cheap! Hot on the heels of his utterly bizarre We Are One collaboration (also reviewed here at RSP!), everyone's favorite Teutonic Metal ogre Herr Udo Dirkschneider returns with that ubiquitous staple - the live album. For a while now it has been common practice for legacy acts, or pretty much any band with a history over 20 years long, to release a live album...-

EXPLODING!†Germany's WIZARD have been at this since 1991 and at this point have pretty much nailed this “true metal†thing down to a science. This, the band's 12th full length offers very little in the way of musical surprises and appears to be purposefully designed that way. WIZARD are catering to a very specific demographic - aficionados of gloriously irony-free...
