    The Movies:

A seventies dirty movie double feature? Sounds good! Here's what Pete's got for his perverted pals this time around…

    Orgy Of The Dolls:

Our first feature was made in 1973 and it starts off with some establishing footage of New York City before cutting to a Doll Shoppe where a woman named Swan Hilda (at least that's what it sounds like based on the narration courtesy of a woman with a thick European accent) busts her husband Franz flirting with one of the dolls here. The place is run by a professor. He drops his keys on the way out, Swan Hilda picks them up and heads inside to investigate. Here he finds the professor's collection of dolls - a cowboy, Raggedy Anne, a guy in a red outfit, a ballerina and Blue Boy! Swan Hilda decides to find out if the dolls are as real as they seem by taking off the cowboy's pants and blowing him! Then she grabs a key and winds up the Raggedy Anne doll - once it comes to life she goes down on it.

From there the rest of the dolls come to life. The Ballerina and the guy in the red suit fool around, the cowboy screws Raggedy Anne and Hilda goes down on Blue Boy. From there she gets the doll out of the window that is dressed like Little Bo Peep. This is the one that her husband has a thing for - Swan Hilda examines the doll and has pretty rad lesbian sex with it once it comes to life. Meanwhile, everyone in the other room is having an orgy. From there, Hilda takes the place of the doll she just chowed down and waits for the professor to return so that she may learn the secrets!

The orgy intensifies as the cowboy uses his gun in ways that, well, you probably would see coming actually. The professor comes home and the dolls return to normal, just in time Franz to show up to talk to the old man. He wants some time with the doll in the window, unaware that it is actually his wife. From there, Franz and the professor drink some wine and mess around with Hilda. After that, she goes into the orgy room where everyone has passed out, then takes Franz and splits leaving the professor alone with the original 'girl in the window.'

    Bordello Girls:

The second film (“A Paree Production”) opens with a phone call. A woman talks to a man named John, he wants to stop by. She agrees to see him in a few minutes and the opening credits tell us that the movie stars Mimi Douche (better known as Jennifer Baxter) as Jennifer and Pierre Chevalier (who looks an awful lot like Jack Teague) as Steve. There's nothing French about this movie at all, but nice job for Pierre Duvall for at least trying to convince us otherwise. A weird muzak version of something that sounds similar to House Of The Rising Sun plays in the background.

As the woman waits, she looks at a photo album of dirty photographs where she spots a picture of Steve, her old pimp. She wonders what he's up to but then a man in a black raincoat shows up. He wants a beautiful and entertaining girl, and she wants cash. They make the exchange and buddy heads into a room where he gets it on with a dark haired girl. As they go at it (this looks like a loop inserted into the feature and the guy is played by Shaun Costello), none other than Steve happens to call our madam, Jennifer, up - he's ten minutes away and can't wait to see her! He shows up and through a secretly installed two way mirror they watch the couple go at it. This gets them hot and bothered enough that, after Steve tells her about his new gig making adult films, Jennifer decides that they should sample some of what he's brought along with him - a stag film. As it plays out, they watch a cute blonde (Darby Lloyd Rains) go at it with a skinny curly haired guy in a big bed. From there, they roll another film, and this time gaze in wild wonder as none other than John Leslie gets his sweaty mitts all over some innocent looking blonde hippie chick. From there they watch one last movie where a fresh faced freckled blonde bones a surfer dude in a tank top.

Eventually this gets Steve and Jennifer horny enough that they screw on her leopard print couch. Once they're done she hands him five grand in cash - she wants to invest. Fini!

Both of these were clearly made fast and cheap and the second feature sure looks like a loop carrier but they're amusing enough. Orgy Of The Dolls is just plain bizarre but the faux-European slant that the movie has going for it is kind of funny and the girl on girl scene is surprisingly effective. The second feature has some recognizable talent attached to it, seen here in their early days - always interesting for fans of vintage smut to get the chance to see stuff like this.

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Both of the movies is presented in a 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and transferred from film prints. They haven't been fully restored so expect a fair bit of print damage and plenty of visible scratches but that doesn't really detract from the experience much. Colors are faded and black levels all over the place but if the elements are in rough shape, at least the disc is fairly well authored and not plagued by compression artifacts or edge enhancement problems. It'd be nice if After Hours started using progressive transfers but that didn't happen. Also this material was clearly shot fullframe, so expect the matting of the 1.33.1 image to 1.78.1 to chop off heads throughout the playback of each movie.

The audio is on par with the video, in that it's rough but serviceable considering the origins of the films and the materials available to work with. Each of the three English language Dolby Digital Mono tracks has some hiss and some audible cracking in spots but most fans of this material won't mind so much.

Extras on the DVD include a five and a half minute intro from Pete as well as collections of trailers for various 42nd Street Pete and After Hours Cinema releases available now. Inside the keepcase alongside the DVD is an insert booklet of liner notes written by 42nd Street Pete that give a rundown of the storefront theaters that populated Times Square before it was cleaned up.

    The Final Word:

Orgy Of The Dolls and Bordello Girls are low budget dirty movie cheapies but they serve their purpose and in that context are effective and amusing enough that fans of esoteric smut should appreciate them. The framing on the transfers is a mistake, and it's clear that these weren't restored but despite all of this, they're watchable enough. Essential porno chic classics? No, but fine adult movie entertainment.
