The Movie:
Umbrella Entertainment's Drive-In Delirium series gets a high definition facelift with the release of Maximum '60s And '70s Savagery, a massive three hundred and sixty seven minutes of trailers from the titular decades, focusing on cult, horror and exploitation titles. In short? BLISS! Here's what you'll find in the two sections contained on this disc:
Part One - The Sixties:
The Pleasure Girls / Peeping Tom / House Of Usher / The Mask / Burn Witch Burn / The Brain That Wouldn't Die / The Long Hair Of Death / Island Of Terror / Corruption / The Conqueror Worm / Eye Of The Cat / Dracula: Prince Of Darkness / Plague Of The Zombies / The Devil's Own / Quatermass And The Pit / The Mummy's Shroud / The Devil's Bride / The Lost Continent / Code 7 Victim 5 / The Quiller Memorandum / Kiss The Girls And Make Them Die / Five Golden Dragons / Deadlier Than The Male / The File Of The Golden Goose / The Big Switch / Machine Gun McCain / The Secret Invasion / The Big Gundown / Guns Of The Magnificent Seven / Gorgo / Jason And The Argonauts / The First Men In The Moon / Robinson Crusoe On Mars / The Satan Bug / Fantastic Invasion Of Planet Earth / Thunderbird 6 / Barbarella / Latitude Zero / The Bedsitting Room / Wild In The Streets / Head
The Hammer Films trailers are highlights in this first batch, some great stuff here, but you've got to love seeing Harryhausen represented a few times and spending some time with a couple of weird sixties counter culture classics towards the end. It's also worth mentioning just how awesome and completely bizarre the trailer for The Mask is - it's one of those trailers that some of us just find endlessly rewatcahble for some reason! Throw in some Italian gothic horror, a Japanese import, some Vincent Price action, a few campy Euro-spy pictures and even some quality Lee Van Cleef footage and the sixties contingent of this disc scores high marks all around.
Part Two - The Seventies:
Trouble Man / Black Caesar / Slaughter / Scream Blacula Scream / Sugar Hill / Frogs / Wicked Wicked / Hannah: Queen Of The Vampires / Seizure / Deranged / The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud / The Town That Dreaded Sundown / Death Trap / Grizzly & Dogs / Rabid / Audrey Rose / Blue Sunshine / Empire Of The Ants / Shock Waves / The Hills Have Eyes / Halloween / Savage Weekend / Salem's Lot / Psychic Killer / Carrie / Jennifer / The Fury / Patrick & Long Weekend / Hatchet For The Honeymoon / Amuck / The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave / Baron Blood / The Lady In Red Kills Seven Times / Carnal Violence / Andy Warhol's Dracula & Count Dracula's Great Love / Vampyres / Strip Nude For Your Killer / Zombie / Vampire Circus / Blood From The Mummy's Tomb / Hands Of The Ripper & Twins Of Evil / Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter / Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell /The Man Who Haunted Himself / Scream And Scream Again! / The Abominable Dr. Phibes & Dr. Phibes Rises Again / 10 Rillington Place / Horror Express / What The Peeper Saw / Don't Look Now / Tales That Witness Madness / The Mutations / Madhouse / The Flesh And Blood Show & House Of Whipcord / Terror / Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls / The Lickerish Quartet / Salon Kitty / Massage Parlor Hookers / Sugar Cookies / Eskimo Nell / Bloody Mama & Boxcar Bertha / Act Of Vengeance / Assault On Precinct 13 / Moon / Live Like A Cop Die Like A Man / When Eight Bells Toll / Vanishing Point / The Mechanic / Scorpio / McQ / The Taking Of Pelham 123 / Thunderbolt And Lightfoot / Killer Force / Vigilante Force / Rolling Thunder / Hardcore / The Warriors / The Man From Hong Kong & Stunt Rock / The Boys From Brazil / The Magnificent Seven Ride / Bite The Bullet / Keoma / Shoot The Sun Down / The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant / Beware The Blob / Sleeper / Schlock / Futureworld / Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger / The Incredible Melting Man / Damnation Alley / Mad Max / Capricorn One / Star Crash / Star Trek: The Motion Picture / Avalanche
Again, we get a few solid Hammer Films trailers here but as the seventies was a more diverse decade for film it stands to reason that the selection representing the decade would be quirky and eclectic. As such, we get some blaxpliotation trailers, some traditional horror films as well as some stranger and more subversive entries (we're looking at you, Mr. Cronenberg) along with some nature run amuck pictures, some slashers, vampire films, zombie films, art horror, plenty of European imports and yet more Vincent Price. As we move through the horror pictures into more drive-in centric fare we're treated to some Russ Meyer, some Roger Corman and even some fancier sexploitation auteurs like Metzger and Brass, before then moving into action movie territory for a while. Lots of great international entries in here, and as the disc comes to a close we get to check out some vintage sci-fi trailers just for good measure.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Drive-In Delirium: '60s And '70s Savagery arrives on a 50GB Blu-ray disc and not surprisingly, the aspect ratio changes depending on the aspect ratio of the respective trailer that's playing. While there's some light DNR here and there, for the most part this is a pretty solid presentation. The trailers were clearly in very nice shape, they're all much cleaner looking than you'd expect if you've watched other trailer compilations that have hit the market over the years, and color reproduction looks spot on as well. There are no issues with compression artifacts or edge enhancement and detail and clarity are pretty good here. No complains, this is a nice presentation.
Audio chores are handled by an English language Dolby Digital Mono track, there are no subtitles or closed captioning options provided. Despite the absence of a lossless track, the audio here is more or less problem free. The levels are well balanced and there aren't any serious problems with any hiss or distortion.
Extras include a still gallery, a promo spot for the feature, menus and chapter selection.
The Final Word:
Drive-In Delirium: '60s And '70s Savagery is one of those discs that has something for everyone! Sure, trailer compilation junkies will have seen some of the more common inclusions here before but there's enough new or at least rarer content on the disc to make this worth plunking down for. Add to that the fact that the presentation quality is very good and this disc scores high marks all around.
