    The Movie:

Two early eighties features from 'The Lewis Brothers' make their way to a double feature DVD courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome!

    Ladies Night:

The first feature starts off in a hot tub. Here foxy Betty (Annette Haven) lets her mind wander into sexy territory when her football obsessed husband (Richard Bern) can't be bothered to give her the sweet loving she so obviously deserves. Why? Because the football game is on, damn it! As such, she lies back in the tub and in her mind's eye sees a female coach (Phaery Burd) get down and dirty with a player (Ken Scudder) who didn't perform up to her standards on the field.

Understandably fed up, she gets together with a few likeminded ladies who have found themselves in similar situations - Angie (Nicole Black) and Irene (Lisa De Leeuw) - who fool around together (yay!) for a bit before heading out to a male strip club for a wild night out. Here the bartender (Herschel Savage) seems to be constantly serviced under the bar while the MC for the night (Paul Thomas) encourages increasingly deviant behavior from the audience and the performers alike. As some guys compete in a wet underwear contest Betty gets in on the onstage action while Irene heads to the pool room for a tryst on the table with two waiters (Blair Harris and Starr Wood). Elsewhere, Angie is going at it with the valet (Jesse Adams). Back home, however, things take an unexpected turn when Betty's husband has a few friends over and they in turn bring a couple of girls with them.

There's not much of a story here but that doesn't actually hurt the film - if the plot is simple, it's effective. It sets up Betty as a sympathetic character and while maybe marriage counselling was a better option for healing her wounded marriage than banging a bunch of strangers, you like her enough to understand her plight. And honestly, you'd rather watch Annette Haven do what she does best than sit through a drama about wounded hearts and all that, right? Of course you would. And hey, throw curvy cutie Lisa De Leeuw and the equally lovely Nicole Black into the mix and you've got yourself a pretty solid bevy of beauties for your film.

Really though, the plot works. It's fun. This is all done with a good sense of humor and all involved seem to be enjoying themselves not just in the copious scenes of copulation but even in the moments, few and far between, where people aren't bumping uglies. The guys are all having fun here too - Paul Thomas is hilarious as the uber-suave MC and Herschel Savage is a kick as the bartender. The wet underwear contest is just as goofy as it sounds and the whole thing is just silly. It's a lot of fun though - good, sexy fun. The cast really make this one.

    Her Wicked Ways:

The second film on the disc tells the story of a woman named Ruby (Jesie St. James) whose recently deceased business tycoon of a husband has left her a huge sum of cash and control of his company, much to the clearly visible dismay of her stepdaughter, Catherine (Joanna Storm). Ruby's not so broken up that she can't enjoy a quick hop into bed with some lucky stud, however. When Catharine uses everything she can to get the money from Ruby, who right or wrong did legally inherit the money, Ruby decides she's got no choice but to pay her back in kind.

As this all plays out, Ruby goes about getting everything she can to keep Catherine on her toes. Catharine, however, has hired ace detective Riff Rafferty (Paul Thomas) to keep tabs on her step-mom and dig up whatever he can to help her case. When Ruby finds out that the company's stocks have bombed since her husband died, she takes it upon herself to boost both moral and profit by tracking down would be stockholders and using her feminine wiles to make them see things her way. After having a three-way with the chairman of the board (Eric Edwards) and his lovely secretary (Tigr), it looks like Ruby has the upper hand. Meanwhile, Catharine takes comfort in the arms and between the legs of her secretary, Gilda (Janey Robbins). When the two female leads get into a nasty fight poolside and the innocent pool boy (Mike Horner) gets caught in the crossfire, Ruby uses her special set of skills to bring him back to life just in time for the board to call a special meeting to decide who should really be in charge of the company after all…

Her Wicked Ways is a pretty entertaining mix of sex, drama and comedy. Plenty of backstabbing here, almost all of which comes with, of course, a sexual twist, but it keeps things moving at a good pace and makes you want to find out how the story is going to end. Again, it isn't super complex, but it works quite well and it is more than enough to string together the various sex scenes. Ms. St. James is in very fine form here, giving as good as she gets, while Joanna Storm proves every part her equal when it comes to getting busy. Throw some fun supporting work from Eric Edwards, Tigr, Mike Horner and Janey Robbins into the mix and yeah, this one shapes up well. Nice production values, a good score and solid camerawork help a lot here too. It's a fairly glossy production that's easy on the eyes.

And if that weren't enough, Lisa De Leeuw provides an amusing text piece that precedes the movie encouraging adult movie audiences to stand up for the First Amendment by patronizing theaters that show dirty movies. You go girl!

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Both movies are presented anamorphic widescreen in standard definition transfer taken from new 2k scans of 35mm elements. Each film looks good. We get strong detail and clarity throughout, both films are pretty clean and show little in the way of print damage. Great colors, good depth and texture, strong black levels - these look great.

Both films get the English language Dolby Digital Mono treatment. Clarity is just fine in each film with the music used in each feature sounding nice and clear. Balance is fine in each picture. There's a bit of hiss in Ladies Night but it's nothing too distracting. Otherwise, dialogue is clean, crisp and clear. There are no alternate language options or subtitles provided.

The only extra on the disc is an interview with Harry Lewis, Elliot Lewis and Wes Emerson in which the three 'Lewis Brothers' talk about how they got their start in the adult film industry by way of shooting for adult magazines. There's some interesting talk here of run-ins with the law, some of the people that they worked with over the years and various productions that they had a hand in working on in and around the San Francisco area during the boom years of the business. Interesting stuff.

    The Final Word:

Vinegar Syndrome's DVD double feature release of Peekarama: Ladies Night / Her Wicked Ways is a good one, presenting two enjoyable early eighties productions made with solid casts and with decent stories. The presentation here is top notch and there's a lot to like here for fans of the era's dirty movies.
