The Movie:
Coach Rolando's team has just lost the big game and while this would be bad enough on its own, it's made a whole lot worse by the fact that he had a pretty sizeable wager riding on his team making the grade with a nasty loan shark who is now wanting to collect what is owed to him. Things look pretty grim for Rolando, the loan shark is intent on killing him when he finds out that he can't pay his debt, until Rolando convinces him to give him one last shot at making up for his mistakes.
Not sure exactly how to come up with the cash quickly enough, Rolando is hanging out at the soccer field one day when inspiration hits him. People like soccer well enough, and people like foxy ladies too, so why not combine the two? It's a combination that just can't lose. With this in mind, Rolando sets out to recruit the hottest ladies around to play soccer for him in the men's league, where not only will people flock to see them but they'll also be able to easily distract the male players and make their way to victory. Rolando's plan looks like its going to go off without a hitch until the couch of the team that trounced him in last years final figures out what he's up to and figures he can once again beat him at his own game…
Obviously inspired by Stephen Chow's box office smash Shaolin Soccer (a damn funny movie and those who haven't seen it would do well to check it out) which proved that sports and comedy could do well together in Hong Kong theaters, Sexy Soccer is pretty predictable as far as storyline go. It doesn't try to break any new ground or wow the viewer with clever humor, instead it goes for crass sex jokes and hot girls in revealing outfits or nothing at all. While there's obviously nothing wrong with this (naked ladies are a good thing), it doesn't do anything to really differentiate itself from the other crass sex comedies out there which unfortunately makes it a rather forgettable affair. That being said, there are a few laugh out loud moments and the girls who do disrobe for the camera are certainly very easy on the eyes. If you're looking for a fun and light time killer with a crass sense of humor and plenty of dumb jokes, this one will fit the bill.
Video/Audio/Extras:
The movie was shot fast and cheap on video and as such, there are some scenes that look better than others because of the lighting and the budget that the filmmaker's had to work with. As far as the transfer itself goes, the image is fine. It stays stable from start to finish and the fullframe image, while a little devoid of color in some spots (again, an obvious problem with the source and not the transfer), it's perfectly watchable and more than acceptable.
Sexy Soccer hits DVD with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo tracks available in Cantonese or Mandarin with optional English subtitles. The film was shot in Mandarin and that's the way to watch it here. Dialogue is clean and clear and free of any hiss or distortion while the sound effects and background music are mixed into the background properly and don't overpower the performers. The English subtitles are easy to read and free of any typographical errors.
Extra features on this release include a trailer for the phenomenal Zero Woman - Red Handcuffs and the completely odd Lupin The III - Strange Psychokinetic Strategy, and that's it aside from menus and chapeter selection.
The Final Word:
Sexy Soccer is pretty goofy stuff to the point where a fair bit of the humor gets grating quickly. Crass comedy is lots of fun when its down well, here it's only average at best. Fans of Hong Kong comedies might want to give this one a look as there are a few stand out moments and a lot of pretty naked girls, but that's about all it has going for it despite a decent presentation from Discotek.Posting comments is disabled.
