The Movie:
A French-American co-production directed by the late Fred J. Lincoln and released in 1983, That's Outrageous stars Jamie Gillis as Paul, a photographer by trade with bad taste in pants and good taste in women. He and his associate, Rick (Joey Silvera), are two Americans working in the Parisian fashion industry where they meet all kinds of beautiful women. Paul in particular is a big of a dog, vowing to Rick that he's not only going to get it on with lovely Martine (Natasha) but her equally foxy sister Michelle (France Lomay, credited as Frannie Lomay) as well.
How does he make this work? Well, to Martine he's Paul, but to Michelle he's Phillipe, so he's got the dual identity thing going on, and he's also got a second apartment, which makes it easy to keep things separate, at least to start with. After we get familiar with the situation and see him getting it on with both women separately, well, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that sooner or later the girls will be on to him. Meanwhile, Rick is hitting it off quite swimmingly with another model named Nichole (Anna Ventura). When Paul decides he wants to get both sisters in bed at the same time he comes up with a plan to hold a masquerade ball - that'll allow him, under cover of the different disguises worn by the participants, to make his three way fantasy come true. Of course, it doesn't quite work out the way that he planned.
This cross continental porno might aspire to work on the same level as something like the film's Radley Metzger was making a few years earlier but it never quite rises to that level. Having said that, if this isn't high art the way the Henry Paris pictures were, it's still entertaining comedic smut that offers up some pretty solid sex scenes and a few good laughs. The cinematography in the film is really solid, capturing some familiar Parisian landmarks in all their touristy glory and framing all the action in and out of the bedroom rather well. The picture is also well paced, moving along at a good clip and never going too far with the plot before throwing in another fuck scene.
The movie benefits from a strong cast as well. Gillis features as the male lead in most of the sex scenes, so his fan base will appreciate seeing him get a lot of screen time here. He's a pro - handling the copulation as easily as the comedy and, yes, even the mild drama that comes into play in the latter half of the film with ease. He and Joey Silvera have a fine chemistry here, you never feel that these guys wouldn't hang out and get into trouble in real life. As to the ladies, well, Euro-smut fans will appreciate seeing pretty France Lomay (from the Six Swedes films and a few Alpha France productions) show up here looking really good. Her female co-star, Natasha, doesn't have a lot of credits to her name but she too performs well and looks good doing it. In a surprise to no one, they eventually hop into bed together for a girl on girl scene that works really nicely. It's also great to see the lovely Anna Ventura show up here as Silvera's main squeeze, while cameos from Mai Linn, Tiffany Clark and Sharon Kane are all worth mentioning as well.
Video/Audio/Extras:
The feature is presented anamorphic widescreen in a standard definition transfer taken from a new 2k scan of the original 35mm negative. Generally speaking, the film looks great, offering strong detail and clarity throughout. Additionally, the film is also pretty clean and shows little in the way of print damage. Great colors, good depth and texture, strong black levels - no complaints here.
Audio? That's Outrageous gets the English language Dolby Digital Mono treatment. Clarity is just fine in the film with the music used in the feature sounding nice and clear. Balance is fine, dialogue is clean, crisp and clear. There are no alternate language options or subtitles provided.
Aside from menus, chapter selection and a still gallery the disc also includes an interview with adult film actor John Mozzer (who appears in the film credited as Alan Adrian). In this twelve minute featurette he speaks candidly about working alongside some of his co-stars like Jamie Gillis, Fred J. Lincoln's directorial abilities, some of the partying that happened off camera on adult film shoots and a fair bit more. It's an interesting piece that's worth checking out if you have an interest in the history of adult films.
The Final Word:
That's Outrageous is a pretty fun watch, an hour and a half of solid sex, decent laughs and some fairly good performances enhanced by some authentic European locations and co-stars. Vinegar Syndrome's DVD release of the film is a good one, presenting the film in excellent shape with an interesting bonus interview as its primary extra feature.
