    Year: 2006

    The Movie:

Mix tapes are fun. As a youth it was always a kick finding odd songs and sound clips and making tapes for friends. Normally I'd include one with a birthday present or a Christmas gift as kind of a free bonus treat for people I liked but half of the fun was in actually figuring out what to put on my homemade compilations and in what order it should appear. Should the focus be hip-hop or metal? Punk or country? All of the above? Should a sound clip of Bela Lugosi come before or after a power ballad by Stryper? These were all important questions that needed to be answered, and they also provided an excuse to dig out tapes and/or CDs that hadn't been played in a while and revisit them and at the same time, share some of that love.

Cinema Sewer is doing their part to keep the mix tape tradition alive, though this time it's a 'video mix tape' in that instead of a random assembly of sound bites and music we get bits and pieces from odd television shows, backyard wrestling videos, weird smut, and foreign cinematic oddities all cut together and set to music in much the same way that Five Minutes To Live have released their Lost And Found Compilations. Anyone who has read Cinema Sewer knows that in addition to being an interesting and informative journal on the weird world of movies and home video it's also got a refreshingly crass sense of humor to it and with that in mind it shouldn't surprise anyone to find that a lot of the clips on this compilation are wonderfully gross.

Some of the material in this first of what will hopefully be many volumes might look more familiar than other bits and pieces. The public service announcement in which Lemmy of Motorhead addresses the concerns that affect the day to day life of hermaphrodites played by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame has been seen before, most commonly on a certain Troma release, but in the context of the 'mix tape' concept it fits in well here, as do more random moments such as a pretty self explanatory bit culled from the infamous Bongwater Butt Babes DVD. More random moments, such as a nice segment lifted from a Japanese kids show called Gimme Gimme Octopus are more than welcome as are some excellent promotional spots for a few pilot shows that for whatever reason never made it to the big time, like The Mighty Thor.

There's also a lot of Jackass style frat stunts such as a man being whipped around while tied to the back of a car and riding on a flat board through some crates, or some obviously inbred and possibly retarded backyard wrestlers who attempt a pile-driver of some sort off of a house rooftop to predictably painful results. There are a lot of bike wipe outs, skateboard stunts and the like in here, most of which result in someone falling down, getting hurt, and in the viewer laughing at either their misfortune or their stupidity (maybe both). To father that, there's a great clip of some BMX riders who get into hot water with an overzealous security guard in Miami that results in some funny insult hurling and damaged equipment.

But what about the smut? Doesn't Cinema Sewer kind of fester in its own depraved filth when it comes to dirty movies? Don't worry, you're well covered there as well, though not as well covered as a Japanese woman who manages to take a whole lot of goop to the face, or the inevitable poop shoot action that shows up here a few times (one of which is actually in reverse motion, you can imagine the effect that has on the old' noggin). The highlight of the dirtier clips has got to the male adult film star who can't finish the job without taking care of business himself. When the man behind the camera ridicules him, the performer finishes him off too, though this time with his fists and not his palm. Another interesting clip, on a completely unrelated note, involves a crazy homeless man who flips out and beats the snot out of a fancy PT Cruiser at an intersection using a crowbar and uttering all manner of fun curse words.

The end result of all of this is an hour and a half of brain melting stupidity and senseless sleaze. Some of the clips are disgusting but most of them are genuinely funny and the compilation is never dull. Some of the clips could have been shorter and others could have been longer but it's a well edited montage of madness that's perfect for putting on when you want to kill some brain cells. Fun stuff!

    Video/Audio/Extras:

Everything is more or less fullframe save for a couple of widescreen clips here and there. Given the nature of the production, there's some variation in quality in terms of what looks good and what doesn't but everything is perfectly watchable and the image remains pretty consistent. Colors are pretty strong and all things considered, the bulk of the material looks good.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 track isn't fancy but it gets the job done. Like the video, quality fluctuates a bit from clip to clip but everything is well balanced and for the most part it's pretty clean and clear. There are no serious issues with this, and in fact it sounds better than you'd probably expect it to considering the varied sources from which it was compiled.

Well aside from chapter selection, there's nothing else on the disc save for the feature. However, the packaging for this release is pretty cool - on the back you get a goofy little comic strip and the cover can only be described as a brilliant work of erotic art!

    The Final Word:

The Cinema Sewer Retard-O-Tron Video Mix Tape appeals to the juvenile side but I'll be damned if I didn't think it was hilarious. That being said, I'm a pervert but if you've read this far you probably are too.

      Tormented – Movie Review:

The late Bert I. Gordon’s 1963 horror film, ‘Tormented,’ is an effectively spooky ghost story made with an obviously low budget but no less effective for it.
