My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie - Movie Review:

Directed and co-written by Pim de la Parra and released in 1975, My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie introduces us, first, to Susan (Willeke Van Ammelrooy of Frank & Eva), a model now more interested in living a quiet life in the country. She lives out in the sticks in a picturesque farmhouse with three rather promiscuous younger women: Sandra (Marja de Heer), Olga (Franulka Heyermans) and the seemingly nocturnal Julie (Marieke van Leeuwen). Also poking about is a voyeuristic young photographer named Albert (Serge-Henri Valcke of The Lift).

Things get complicated when Anton (Hans van der Gragt) shows up to pick Susan up for her latest job. He becomes instantly intrigued by the presence of the other women in the house and decides it might be in his best interest to hang around for a while. When a motorist winds up dead, a mentally unstable woman named Piet (Nelly Frijda), who lives nearby, is suspected as the culprit but soon the truth comes out about what's really going on here.

The last of the "Dutch Sex Wave" productions to come from Scorpion Films, My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie was beautifully shot in scope by Marc Felperlaan (who also shot The Lift) and features an excellent score from Hammer Films/Amicus Productions composer Elisabeth Lutyens who did Never Take Sweets From A Stranger and Paranoiac for Hammer and The Skull and Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors for Amicus. It would turn out to be her final score, but at least she went out on a high note. Production values, overall, are quite good here. The remote farmhouse where the vast majority of the story takes place proves to be the perfect setting for all of this while both the cinematography and the score complement things very nicely indeed.

Performances are quite good. Willeke Van Ammelrooy has got fantastic screen presence here and it is exploited very well. Marja de Heer, Franulka Heyermans and Marieke van Leeuwen also deliver strong supporting performances. Nelly Frijda steals most of the scenes that she appears in while Hans van der Gragt does fine as the male lead.

Pim de la Parra's direction is solid. He keeps the eighty-five-minute movie going at a very good clip, giving us the right mix of character development, drama, intrigue and, yes, sex to hold our attention. He co-wrote the screen play with a few other people, one of whom was Harry Kumel who made Daughers Of Darkness and Malpertius.

My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie - Blu-ray Review:

Cult Epics touts their release as being taken from a 'new HD restoration and transfer from original 35mm print.' Framed at 2.33.1 widescreen and presented in AVC encoded 1080p high definition, the transfer is quite good. Detail is solid throughout and the image remains clean, showing very little print damage while retaining the expected amount of natural film grain. Colors are reproduced rather well and skin tones look good. The image is free of obvious compression artifacts and is entirely devoid of noise reduction or edge enhancement issues.

DTS-HD 2.0 Mono tracks are provided in the film's original Dutch language and in an optional dubbed English language version with removable English subtitles provided. The film plays much better in Dutch, no surprise there, but it's nice to have the English option included here for those who want it. The Dutch track is clean, clear and nicely balanced. Range is a little bit limited in spots but otherwise, no complaints at all.

Extras start off with an eleven-minute introduction by Pim de la Parra in which he speaks on camera about the film's production and distribution history, originally intending to cast Ruger Hauer as the male lead and its relationship to other Scorpio Films productions. This is interesting and worth checking out.

Cult Epics has also included three Scorpio Films shorts in the form of 1966's bizarre experimental Heart Beat Fresco which runs ten-minutes, 1969's Joop which runs eleven-minutes and 1970's Joop Strikes Again which also runs eleven-minutes, all of which are presented in high definition. The first short is odd but worth seeing for that reason whereas the two Joop films follow the titular character (played by Wies Andersen) and his exploits with members of the fairer sex.

Rounding out the extras is a still gallery, a trailer for the feature and bonus trailers for the other Scorpio Films releases currently available from Cult Epics (Obsessions, Frank & Eva, Blue Movie). Menus and chapter selection are also included and as this is a combo pack release we also get a DVD version of the movie taken from the same restoration and including the same extras. Both discs fit inside a standard sized Blu-ray keepcase that contains a reversible cover sleeve and comes packaged with a slipcover.

My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie - The Final Word:

My Nights With Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie is pretty entertaining stuff - it's artsy, quirky, sexy and weird enough to work. Cult Epics brings this one to Blu-ray in style, with a very nice presentation and a few solid extra features as well. Recommended!
