Nurse Girls' Dorm: Shamed Angel - Movie Reviews:

This sixty-three-minute Nikkatsu production from 1987, directed by Yasuhiro Horiuchi, opens at an amusement park under a ferries wheel. A young woman watches a child play, giggles to herself, and then walks home to the female dorm at the Shirayuri General Hospital. Her name is Yukari Satane (Tomomi Segawa) and she's the new girl. She meets her cooler roommate Kimi who first appears in dark shades smoking a cigarette. From there, Yukari gets to work, checking in on patients, one of whom sexually harasses her right off the bat.

That night, Yukari goes for drinks with a few other nurses who tell her not to get too worked up, this type of thing happens all the time. Kimi, meanwhile, is excited that she's got tickets for the upcoming Takanaka concert. Their talk is interrupted when they notice Dr. Muraoka walk in. The subject changes to how cool he is and how some of the nurses would like to sleep with him. Yukari blushes, the others accuse her of still being a virgin. After that bar, Kimi, who believes Yukari to be asleep, brings a man into their room and has sex with him. Yukari hears all of this, but pretends to sleep through it all - though she quietly touches herself as the other two go at it. When one of the head nurses hears what's going on through the door, she brings Yukari and Kimi into the bathroom, accuses them of bringing a man 'into this sacred dorm' and proceeds to cleanse their dirty bodies. Kimi takes full responsibility and says that Yukari had nothing to do with it, but they're told it's a collective responsibility and then literally hosed down.

That next day, Dr. Muraoka calls the nurses station and needs help with a surgery he's performing (cue graphic and real looking surgical footage inserts). Yukari attends and when it's complete he tells her she did a good job for a new nurse. She winds up back at his place where he puts the moves on her. She protests a bit to start but he doesn't take no for an answer and soon enough he's screwing her on the floor. The next day Yukari and Kimi are talking. Kimi realizes Yukari is hiding something but drops it when a man named Kenji, a patient who had previously given Yukari a love letter, shows up. He's into her but she's not so when she rejects him he hangs upside down from some fencing? Yep, that's what he does alright.

As the story goes on, Yukari sees Muraoka a few times but worries that they might get into trouble if they're spotted. After they leave the bar another woman shows up, has the bartender close shop and screws him near the piano. The bartender accuses her of being jealous, of still being in love with Muraoka. Yukari is told later not to get involved with Muraoka, that she'll only wind up unhappy - she tells him about this on their next day and he laughs it off, but when he mentions how beautiful one of his patient's bone fractures was, she gives him a funny look. This doesn't stop them from fucking like rabbits a few minutes later, however, but things get kinkier when he butters up her ass - literally - and decides to use the back door! As Kimi puts the moves on Kenji, it's clear he still carries a torch for Yukari, who is growing increasingly concerned about where her relationship with the doctor is headed.

Lots of weird, swirling camerawork and some freaky ocular close-up shots (specifically in that surgery scene) keep the visuals interesting in this one. The story might not sound all that twisted but things get pretty dark once Muraoka's true personality comes to light. There's some interesting visuals here too - the sight of the rain washing away a white chalk children's drawing of a nurse, some odd lighting effects used on a scene where a woman undresses, an oral sex scene done entirely in silhouette (still pixelated, mind you) and a piece of broken glass used to show off a reflection in the finale. The look of the film, combined with the weird carnival music score that is used intermittently throughout the movie, makes this one weirder than your average sexually charged relationship drama, which is what this story is when you get right down to it.

Tomomi Segawa is good in the lead. She has a believable innocence about her that suits her character well. She's attractive, yes, but her character's modesty - at least to start with - is a bit part of what makes her interesting. As Muraoka starts to break that down, Yakuari changes but of course, things go too far and, well… drama! But yeah, Tomomi Segawa pulls this off. The guy who plays Muraoka appears to be Shirí´ Shimomoto from Women In Heat Behind Bars and the amazing S&M Hunter. He's really solid here, bringing a quirky intensity to his part and believably dominating Segawa's character in their scenes together.

Nurse Girls' Dorm: Shamed Angel - DVD Review:

Nurse Girls' Dorm: Shamed Angel is presented in 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen in a transfer clearly taken from an analogue tape source but at least it's one that was clearly in good condition. The image is a bit soft and detail is never particularly strong but the image is stable, no problems with tape rolls or tracking lines of any kind. Colors look a bit flat and black levels are inconsistent. This isn't reference quality by any stretch but it's all watchable enough.

The Japanese language Dolby Digital Mono track is fine. It's a bit flat and it has some audible crackle in the opening few minutes but thankfully that goes away fairly quickly. The white subtitles are clean, clear and easy to read and free of any noticeable typographical errors.

There are no extras, just a static menu.

Nurse Girls' Dorm: Shamed Angel - The Final Word:

Nurse Girls' Dorm: Shamed Angel is a well-made mix of drama and tension, a kinky tale that takes some interesting an unexpected twists and turns as it all plays out. The DVD looks okay and the sound is fine. No extras, but the movie is worth checking out for those with a taste for sleazy Nikkatsu pictures.
