Nun's Diary: Confession - Movie Reviews:
Also known as Wet & Rope and Wet Rope Confession, this wonderfully salacious Nikkatsu title from 1978 comes courtesy of the director Kí´yí» Ohara, who gave us titles like Fairy In A Cage and White Rose Campus. The film revolves around Miki Natsume (Yuki Nohira), has recently married a doctor, a feat unable to be accomplished by her fellow nurses. On their wedding night, she retreats to the bathroom to soak in the tub, unaware that a few thugs have broken in and tied up her husband. Mike, naked, is a sitting duck and, unsurprisingly, she's raped, calling out to her husband (who is forced to watch). The fiends split the place and, rather than comfort his new bride, the husband chastises poor Miki when she tries to call the cops. He's already seen different for marrying a nurse, he can't have this get out too. When he tells her 'Let's call it quits and pretend this never happened' she is, quite understandably, distraught. She wanders the seaside alone and is all set to kill herself when she's 'saved' by a Catholic priest named Xavier. He tells her to trust God and that he'll bring her to a good monastery where she can serve the Lord.
Good on his word, Xavier puts a word in at The Holy Mother Monastery and when Miki arrives, the other nuns are ready for her. Sister Maria (Yí»ko Akane) is put in charge of bringing Miki up to speed - and she does. Before you know it, Miki is all decked out in a habit and taking part in meals with her fellow brides of Christ. She also sees that, when left to their own devices, some of these nuns will masturbate using a hard loaf of bread and then run off to a strange dark room full of ropes and restraints for a little Sapphic alone time all within eyesight of a grey haired man who is kept in a cell for some reason. He watches them go at it while he cleans bedpans, until it's time for him to join in at which point the bars come up, the whip comes out and he punishes the two nuns. Miki and Maria watch all of this from afar and Maria gives Miki background information on the man with the whip and how he uses to be the Abbesses boyfriend, partaking in a decidedly forbidden love only to be relieved of his manhood when the priests found out. This lead to the man developing a violent hatred of sex and lust.
Horrified by this, Miki runs to the chapel to ask the Lord for guidance only to be interrupted by the arrival of an injured man wearing sunglasses. He's clearly been involved in something he shouldn't have been and asks Miki not to call the cops. She agrees and helps by treating his wounds, removing a bullet from his shoulder. He asks her if she knows Yoko Kazama, a nun he believes lives at the monastery. He doesn't have nice things to say about her.
The next day, Miki asks about Yoko and is told not to get involved, just as the cops show up looking for the man she helped the night before who, it turns out, was a Yakuza. Miki is asked to accompany Maria and deliver a letter to St. Michael's Church to see if she still misses the outside world. Along the way they discuss matters of the heart and stop off at a discotheque where Miki is taken aback by how loose Maria gets with some of the guys. Some horny guys get too aggressive so they split, but the guys give chase and the girls get separated. Maria winds up in a bedroom where she gets into some kinky bondage stuff and has a three-way with two of the disco guys. Left to her own devices, Miki stops by the pharmacy to get meds for the injured gangster she helped the night before. She runs into Maria on the way back and they head back to their room unaware that the Abbess is having a conversation with Xavier about an upcoming celebration of sorts called The Saint Animal Party. Things get even weirder from there as the Yakuza rapes Maria, making Miki jealous. When Miki is accused of being a lesbian she's brought to the weird sex basement where the weird guy with the whip hangs out, tied to a cross and punished when she refuses to confess. She blacks out and wakes up in Xavier's room where he starts quoting scripture and fondling her while perpetually horny Maria pays another visit to the Yakuza where the truth about Yoko Kazama comes to light, leading into that celebration the abbess and Xavier were talking about earlier, where Miki is to serve God by playing the 'stray sheep.' This won't end well.
You can always count on Kí´yí» Ohara's films to stand out from the herd. Case in point? If you've ever wanted to see a nun dressed like a sheep fucked by a drunk Japanese guy wearing 'black face' masks only to have an orgy break out between the rest of the nuns and the rest of the dudes with the masks on, which is admittedly a remarkably specific kink, this'll scratch that itch for you. This is a stylish film, a well-directed picture that takes some well-aimed shots at the Catholic establishment while asking questions about the merits of faith and morality in general. The sex scenes are graphic and frequently kinky but don't take you out of the film, instead they add to the depraved atmosphere that Ohara so effective conjures up in this picture. Political correctness was clearly not a consideration here and the movie relishes in the many chances it has to toy with, and break, taboos and social mores but there's a decent story told here as well. Nun's Diary: Confession keeps us engaged throughout, we want to know what's going to happen to Miki and the Yakuza and the effective foreshadowing in the first half of the film pays off when everything goes off the rails in the second half. Yuki Nohira does a great job in the lead, playing naí¯ve and innocent rather well and looking great when she does it. Yí»ko Akane is just as good as Maria, playing her nympho nun character with plenty of appreciable enthusiasm.
Nun's Diary: Confession - DVD Review:
Nun's Diary: Confession is presented in 2.35.1 anamorphic widescreen in a transfer clearly taken from an older master but at least it's one that was clearly in good condition. The image is a bit soft and detail is never particularly strong but the image is stable, no problems with tape rolls or tracking lines of any kind. Colors look a bit flat and black levels are inconsistent. This isn't reference quality by any stretch but it's all watchable enough.
The Japanese language Dolby Digital Mono track is fine. It's a bit flat and it has some audible crackle in the opening few minutes but thankfully that goes away fairly quickly. The white subtitles are clean, clear and easy to read and free of any noticeable typographical errors.
There are no extras, just a static menu.

Nun's Diary: Confession is a genuinely well-made slice of seventies nunsploitation, a picture that combines kink and conscience in interesting ways, offering up equal doses of style and substance. Impulse Pictures' DVD is devoid of extras but it looks okay - but it's the movie itself that is the real draw here, it's definitely in the upper echelon of the Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection line.
