The Movie:
Does this sound familiar? “That's not good porn! Now back in my day all you needed was a pretty girl dancing around and showing her boobies…now THAT was porn!†Probably not, but if you had a talk with a geezer about the good old days and subject of porn popped up you just might hear that. American Nudie Classics shows just what the aging fart meant from the 1930s through the 1960s, before the world of home video and hardcore really came into the game. Pop this disc in the player and feast your eyes on what the old timers had to get off too back in the days when you had to go in a back alley theater, or if you were lucky a buddy's basement.
Each segment starts of with some footage of historic or iconic moments from the decade. The loops therein are accompanied by music from that era featuring sexy babes in various states of undress, sometimes showcasing in the good stuff. The four sections make up a running time of about three hours and are broken down by decade. One can play the entire collection at once, or by year, or within the year select single loops.
1930s (28:51) This decade features some short silent movies and some nudist fun. There are pubes and some pretty ladies for sure. Oh and the only sex act is on this one...two chicks. All footage is black and white
1940s (28:03) Dance numbers dominate this decade, all in glorious black and white. Some without any nudity at all.
1950s (33:02) This one's got some color footage, and brings more of the same. One particular one has a savage trying to tame a beauty with a spear and a cage. That's about as kinky as it gets.
1960s (1:28:17) Groovy music, swanky women, longer teases, some big natural boobies, more pubic shots, and most are in color. And this decade delivers the one black woman in the collection, which goes right along with the culture changes in the 60s.
This stuff isn't for everyone. It gets tedious after a while, but its cool to see these people at their physical best, and weird to think many went on to become grandmothers. Makes a person wonder what they would think if their grand kids or great grand kids picked this disc up and recognized them. And how screwed up that might make the kid? How bizarre would that be…
This is entertaining stuff but probably is best in small doses rather than a three hour marathon. There're definitely some good looking women to behold and the disc makes for an interesting study in softcore erotica throughout the mid-20th Century.
Video/Audio/Extras:
American Nudie Classics is presented with a ratio of 1.33:1 full screen. These loops look like they were taken from a tape source, and the video quality varies greatly, with some reels looking pretty nice and others with major damage to them. It's the nature of the beast really. Most “normal†people wouldn't see the value in attempting to preserve this sort of material back in the old days (heck, lots of people probably think that now). At any rate, all are watchable and there don't seem to be any defects or issues with the disc.
The audio is a 2.0 Dolby Digital track (at least that's what PowerDVD says) and it sounds fine. It's all music over silent loops, and the balance sounds fine. No issues to report like hissing, popping or skipping.
The only extra available is called “Trailer Vault†which features the obvious. The Vault has 15 trailers for various releases from Alternative Cinema. There is a “play all†option that is much appreciated. Other than that there's nothing else to mention. But the feature is three hours long so the disc is still a good value for the money.
The Final Word:
A fun release that probably won't bring the viewer to “release†but all the same worthy of examination for fans of retro smut and strip tease material.
