    Delivery Boys – Movie Review:

Delivery Boys starts off with a scene where a bunch of teenaged guys get down to some breakdancing in a church, which is pretty rad. They get down to some serious head spins and back spins, they do the worm, there’s some flippin’ and kickin’ and poppin’ and lockin’ and one guy is dressed like a spaceman for some reason (as if you really need a reason to dress like a spaceman in the first place). Three-minutes later, we cut outside and learn that we’re in New York City – The Big Apple! It’s here that we meet The Delivery Boys - Max (Josh Marcano), Conrad (Jim Soriero), Joey (Tom Sierchio), Izzie (Nelson Vasquez), Scandal (Yayo Gonzalez) and a few other guys - they’re a breakdance crew that also happens to delivery pizzas. They’re also really excited about the upcoming Brooklyn Bridge Breakdance Competition and so they’ve got to practice, practice, practice their moves if they want to take down rivals The Devil Dogs, who are led by Spider (Marion Van Peebles), who may or may not be involved in voodoo and pimping.

As the guys go about prepping for the big event, they also make some weird deliveries, dealing with a horny woman and her P.A. system, a hormone research lab populated by foxy nurses which turns them film briefly into a musical, a bizarre art installation where a statue gets broken leading to an unusual human replacement, a crazy dog, a fake boner and an angry cop, an awkward subway ride and then, ultimately, the main competition.

The acting in this movie isn’t very good, but it doesn’t matter. Van Peebles is, maybe not surprisingly, a few steps above everyone else in the film but if you’ve come to this movie for next level thesping, you’re going to walk away disappointed. The mains are all sufficient, but playing often to broad stereotypes, likely more an issue with the wonky script than anything else. As to the rest of the cast, well, you can’t talk about Delivery Boys without talking about the porn starts that pop up in it. Kelly Nichols, Taija Rae, Veronica Hart and Samantha Fox all appear in the movie in small but noticeable roles. How and why did this happen? Well, the movie was executive produced by one Charles Vincent Dingley, better known as Chuck Vincent, the man who directed over fifty feature length adult movies from the seventies up until 1990 and it would seem that Chuck called up a few friends to appear in the movie. The picture was also shot by Larry Revene, one of the adult film industry’s best cinematographers and a frequent Vincent collaborator.

This movie was directed by Ken Handler, and if you don’t know who that is, well, let’s take a second to explain. See, Ken Handler was the son of Elliot Handler and Elliot Handler worked for Mattel which, in 1961, introduced the Ken doll as a boyfriend for their popular Barbie doll line. Ken, the doll, was inspired by Ken, the man, and thus, Ken Handler was the inspiration for the Ken Doll. So this movie was directed by the guy who was the inspiration for the Ken doll, deals with breakdancing, was produced by a prolific adult filmmaker and feature cameos from a few recognizable adult performers, all of which adds up to a movie best described as absurd.

The tone here is all over the place, the movie doesn’t know what it wants to be, but it’s weird enough to work as a cult oddity. The humor rarely lands, which somehow winds up being funny in its own way, but the dance scenes are kind of cool and if nothing else, Taija Rae looks great in a nurses outfit.

    Delivery Boys – Blu-ray Review:

Scorpion Releasing brings Delivery Boys to Blu-ray taking up just over 22GBs of space on a 25GB disc featuring an AVC encoded 1080p high definition transfer framed at 1.78.1 widescreen and looking a bit on the soft side, likely taken from an older, existing master. There’s a little bit of minor print damage here and there but nothing distracting. The film’s natural grain is left intact, there’s no obvious noise reduction here. Compression artifacts aren’t a problem and colors are reproduced nicely but detail could have been stronger. Still, this is definitely a noticeable step up from what DVD would have provided, even if it does leave room for improvement.

The 24-bit DTS-HD 2.0 Mono track is solid enough and it gets the job done without any real issues. Dialogue is clear, clear and balanced and the score sounds fine, if a tad flat in spots. Optional subtitles are provided in English. good enough even if it never sounds amazing. Optional subtitles are provided in English only.

The main extra on the disc is an interview with director of photography Larry Revene that runs for eighteen-minutes in length. Here he speaks about how and why Ken Handler came to direct the movie as well as how and why none other than Chuck Vincent came on board to produce the picture. This leads into talk about how the different adult performers that appear in the film came to the picture, how the movie was shot over a quick ten day schedule what it was like on set and how he feels about the movie all these years later.

Aside from that, we get trailers for Talking Walls, Covergirl, Omega Syndrome, Torment and Night Patrol.

Delivery Boys – The Final Word Review:

If porn stars, pizza and breakdancing are things you enjoy in your movies, then you’ll be able to look past Delivery Boys’ many and obvious flaws to appreciate the absurdity and insanity of this enjoyably dumb movie. Scorpion Releasing’s Blu-ray looks okay, if never amazing, and the extras are light but the interview with Ravene is quite interesting.
